An NHS worker has said she feels "really lucky" after winning a £1m lottery jackpot just before getting the all-clear from her breast cancer treatment. Maxine Lloyd said she was keeping an eye on her fiance, Wayne Tilbury, who had recently collapsed with a chest infection, at 1.30am when she decided to "have a flutter" on the National Lottery's £30m Mega Cash Showdown Instant Win game. The 50-year-old thought a phone notification she received during her first batch of radiography treatment was a message from her partner - but it was actually a message from her bank to say the winnings had been transferred into her account. In the space of two weeks, Mr Tilbury, a 57-year-old builder, was taken to A&E with the chest infection, Ms Lloyd rang the bell to mark the successful ending of her cancer treatment, and the couple won £1m. "I feel really lucky," Ms Lloyd said. NHS Lanarkshire restricts visiting over abuse of maternity staff
Published 20 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing One of Scotland's largest health boards has restricted visits to a maternity unit over the "almost daily" verbal abuse directed at staff. NHS Lanarkshire said employees in the postnatal wards at University Hospital Wishaw had been targeted. And in one incident staff were "chased out" of a ward by family members unwilling to leave. As a result the board has introduced a change to its policy for second visitor nominations. Those who wish to visit a patient will now be required to make a two-hour appointment in advance. Earlier this year medical staff warned the levels of abuse directed at them was worse than ever before. Man killed in ambulance crash while being rushed to hospital
A suspected heart attack patient died in the back of an ambulance when it crashed into a wall on the way to hospital. Trevor Bailey chatted to paramedics and walked out to the emergency vehicle before being placed on a stretcher in the back on April 22 last year. His wife Jane said the last thing he told her was: ‘Don’t worry about me, I will be fine. Just look after yourself.’ But minutes later the ambulance had smashed into a brick wall, killing Mr Bailey and leaving one of the people treating him lying in the road with serious injuries. An inquest into his death in Hull has heard how the ambulance set off for Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham with blue lights flashing and siren blaring. The court was told it started to move past an HGV on the approach to Barmby Moor after the lorry veered to the left, which driver Gemma Summers took to mean it was giving way. However, it then swung back to the right causing the ambulance to swerve out of the way before ploughing … [Read more...] about Man killed in ambulance crash while being rushed to hospital
Student who put his tiredness down to partying too much gets a devastating diagnosis
A teenager who thought he had partied too much during an interrail trip was struck with a terrifying diagnosis when he returned home. Tom Hunt, then 18, thought he probably needed more sleep and less beer after exploring Europe by train with friends. The student started feeling unwell when they stopped off in Budapest, Hungary, and felt worse by the time they reached Prague, in the Czech Republic. He started suffering from a chest and throat infection and felt exceptionally tired, despite having 16 hours of sleep, reports Manchester Evening News . Tom decided to fly home early and was able to book a doctor's appointment with his friend's dad, who was also his local GP. He was given antibiotics and booked in for a blood test two days later after raising concerns about a large lump on his leg. ‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
Dawn Butler has opened up about one of the toughest parts of her cancer diagnosis – how to tell her loved ones without worrying them. The Labour MP, 52, has spoken candidly about it, revealing earlier this year that she thought she might die after receiving the news following a routine mammogram. She has now teamed up with Metro.co.uk to launch the campaign A Million Missed Mammograms to try and persuade those yet to have a screening to get one booked. ‘You can survive breast cancer, and the earlier you find it the better,’ the former minister said. Ms Butler has thankfully recovered, but she had to endure some incredibly difficult days along the way. On top of the uncomfortable examination, the operation to remove cancerous cells and the fear her diagnosis may become more invasive, she also found herself struggling with something many might deem relatively simple – telling her family, friends and colleagues about what she was going through. The Brent Central MP … [Read more...] about ‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
