Brent Schrotenboer USA TODAY Published 3:56 PM EST Jan 29, 2019 The billionaire owner of the Rams never came clean with the people of St. Louis before he moved his team to Los Angeles in 2016. “Silent” Stan Kroenke didn’t really say anything publicly, not even after news broke in January 2014 that he had purchased land for a potential new stadium near the Los Angeles airport. “Kroenke never shot straight with them,” longtime sportscaster Bob Costas told USA TODAY Sports. And now comes their biggest reminder yet of all that he took away from them. Three years after they abandoned St. Louis for L.A., the Los Angeles Rams will play in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots on Sunday. St. Louis football fans have a rooting interest in this game, if not a team. That’s against Kroenke, who “strung them along” before bailing, said Costas, who has deep ties to St. Louis. The franchise spent 21 years in St. Louis after being lured … [Read more...] about Super Bowl: St. Louis still picking up pieces of Rams saga

Shutdown, Julian Castro, Jayme Closs: Here’s the weekend’s top news
Editors USA TODAY Published 6:04 PM EST Jan 13, 2019 The shutdown is now the longest ever, with no end in sight The partial government shutdown is now the longest in American history, with a fourth of the federal government still shuttered as the standoff enters a fourth week with no end in sight. The shutdown hit its 22nd day on Saturday, surpassing the 21-day record set in 1996 during the Clinton administration. Lawmakers won’t return to Washington until Monday, guaranteeing the government will remain partially closed at least through early this week. Americans widely blame the shutdown on President Donald Trump, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll found. Trump's demands for border wall funding remain central to the prolonged shutdown, with Democrats doubting the effectiveness of a physical barrier. Last week, Mexican authorities uncovered a tunnel across from Arizona that they believe was used to smuggle drugs and … [Read more...] about Shutdown, Julian Castro, Jayme Closs: Here’s the weekend’s top news
WOW Air flights: Budget carrier cuts 4 more cities amid financial woes
Ben Mutzabaugh USA TODAY Published 5:20 PM EST Dec 22, 2018 WOW Air has confirmed it is axing service to at least four more U.S. cities as it restructures amid a cash crunch. “We have decided to stop serving Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York JFK and Dallas/Forth Worth, so they will not feature in our schedule for 2019,” WOW Air spokeswoman Svanhvít Fridriksdóttir said in a statement to USA TODAY’s Today in the Sky blog. “Having said that we will continue to serve our other destinations in North America.” It remains to be seen if WOW will be able to do that. The Icelandic carrier says it will cut its fleet nearly in half, going from 20 planes to just 11 as it seeks to cut costs and raise cash. The fleet reduction has led to speculation about cuts to other U.S. destinations. WOW made its latest downsizing move as it entered into talks with Indigo Partners to take an undisclosed stake in the carrier. Indigo has developed a … [Read more...] about WOW Air flights: Budget carrier cuts 4 more cities amid financial woes

Cubs rally past St. Louis Cardinals; Anthony Rizzo keeps sizzling
CHICAGO – Kyle Schwarber hit a clutch sixth-inning home run, and Jose Quintana threw a team-high 121 pitches as the Cubs pulled off their 32nd comeback victory of the year with a 7-2 win over St. Louis on Sunday at Wrigley Field. But the biggest takeaway after this five-game series – witnessed by 204,468 fans and won by the Cubs, 3-2 – is simple: Anthony Rizzo is on fire. Rizzo’s on-base percentage was .739 against the Cardinals over the weekend, and he became the first Cubs leadoff hitter to reach base four times in three straight games since Brian McRae in August 1996. “It seemed like he was out there all the time,” manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s just been working great at-bats, using the whole field. He’s not trying to force the issue with pitchers throwing pitches in different areas. “He’s getting back to normal.” Which is great news for the Cubs, who are 15-5 in their past 20 games and now lead … [Read more...] about Cubs rally past St. Louis Cardinals; Anthony Rizzo keeps sizzling
