Goals may have been hard to come by so far for Newcastle United this season - but there have been no shortage during Rafa Benitez's reign on Tyneside as a whole. The hunting grounds of the Premier League have proven difficult this term, not least thanks to the Magpies' daunting early Premier League fixture list. But while some choose to focus on the conservative tactics used on occasion under Benitez, the reality is that the Spaniard does gives his sides licence to get forward when the opportunity arises. The Magpies were at the their free-scoring best in Benitez's first full season at the club in the Championship, ending the campaign as the top scorers in the division. United actually had more individual goalscorers on their return to the Premier League, although not surprisingly the overall tally was down on their promotion campaign. So how good is your knowledge of the Magpies goalgetters under Benitez? Newcastle United head to Old Trafford looking to beat Manchester United and claim their first win of the 2018-19 season but TV pundits and our team here at Chronicle Live aren't confident it'll come this Saturday. Rafa Benitez's side lie 18th in the table with just two points and a defeat against Manchester United would equal their second worst start to a top fight campaign - when Steve McClaren went eight games without that first win in 2015. But Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is under pressure with his side lying 10th in the table, and without a win at Old Trafford since the opening of the season. A public fall-out with Paul Pogba hasn't helped his situation and reports suggest he could be sacked should he fail to beat Benitez. However confident is not high among the pundits that the Magpies can get the win. Paul Merson - Sky Sports I watched Newcastle the other day against Leicester and I couldn't believe what I was watching. I've played at St James' park plenty of times and … [Read more...] about Misery predicted for Newcastle United as they head to Manchester United looking for first win
It could have to get worse before it gets better for Newcastle United. Against Leicester City, they were offered the briefest of chances to take the lead and grab something to hang on to before one of the Premier League’s most well-drilled sides in recent times got into their stride. The Magpies helped them along the way by switching off defensively with DeAndre Yedlin literally handing them a gift-wrapped chance to go in front before the break. After Jamie Vardy’s opener, it was always going to be a test of whether the current crop of players could muster up the type of fight that resulted in a top 10 finish last season. It would be a test they failed. You could say that both Joselu and Mo Diame had fluffed early chances to take the lead at the Leazes End but neither of them could even manage to direct a shot on target to bother Kasper Schmeichel. The Dane’s only real piece of work in the 90 minutes was to take the sting out of Jonjo Shelvey’s 60-yard shot in a … [Read more...] about Newcastle United are devoid of confidence and you have to ask where’s the next win coming from?
Mike Ashley was at Selhurst Park as Newcastle United claimed only their second Premier League point of the season. Rafa Benitez's second-bottom side somehow held Crystal Palace to a goalless draw after spending much of the game in their own half.Owner Ashley watched the match with managing director Lee Charnley and associates Justin Barnes and Keith Bishop. And there were repeated chants against the billionaire from United's 2,900-strong travelling support at a soggy Selhurst Park.Newcastle fans chanted for Ashley to "get out of our club" and also briefly held up a banner advertising a website which promotes alternative retailers to his Sports Direct chain.Benitez had recalled Jonjo Shelvey, Salomon Rondon and Kenedy to his starting XI and, arguably, named his strongest team with the exception of Florian Lejeune, out with a long-term injury.Wilfried Zaha – who had demanded more protection from referees after scoring Palace's winner over Huddersfield Town last weekend – was … [Read more...] about Crystal Palace 0 Newcastle United 0: Mike Ashley in stands as fans chant for him to ‘get out of our club’
Sergio Aguero admits he is flattered by the glowing praise he received from Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer. The Magpies’ all-time record scorer described Aguero as the “best foreign player to ever play in the Premier League” with “no weaknesses”. Given that Shearer himself is the Premier League’s record marksman, with 260 goals, Manchester City striker Aguero - who is now 10th on the all-time list with 146 strikes - values the former England captain’s opinion. “It was very flattering to hear Alan Shearer holding me up in such a high regard,” 30-year-old Aguero told Man City’s official website. “He was a fantastic striker and there’s good reason he’s the Premier League’s top scorer. His words encourage me to stay on course and keep scoring goals for City.” Another Premier League record Shearer holds is for the most hat-tricks, with the ex-Newcastle skipper netting 11 trebles during his … [Read more...] about ‘Shearer is the top scorer for good reason’: Aguero flattered by praise
