Liam Dunster took home a record breaking £51,000 prize as he won the Home Leisure Direct Grand Final at the Players' Pool and Snooker Lounge, in Newcastle town centre. The Scottish ace beat Darren Appleton 11-9 in the final to clinch the largest tournament prize ever awarded in English eight-ball pool. Dunster was undefeated over the three-day tournament at the club in Queens Parade. The Newcastle club's co-owner Lee Kendall expects the Home Leisure series to return next year after the success of this year's event. The five-leg series, which culminated in the Newcastle-under-Lyme finals, has featured players representing the UK, Ireland, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. No fewer than nine world champions from the sport's different disciplines took part. But Dunster came through in style as he impressed on his way to the final before seeing off the experienced Appleton. With plans already approved for accommodation for 2,000 students, Newcastle is well on its way to becoming known as a university town. But will the influx of so many students – who are likely to live and shop in Newcastle only during term times – help to revitalise the town centre? Under existing plans which have already been rubber-stamped by Newcastle Borough Council, accommodation for 499 students will be built at the former Bristol Street Motors site, a further 273 rooms will be created at the Sky Building, another 227 at the one-time Metropolis nightclub, and 96 at the old Orme Centre on Orme Road. That is in addition to another 1,473 new student rooms at Keele University’s campus nearby. However, since planning was granted for those schemes, amended proposals have been submitted which are still waiting approval. Under the revised plans, student accommodation at the former Metropolis – which was also the Savoy Cinema – has been dropped to 211 rooms, … [Read more...] about Will 2,000 extra students help revitalise Newcastle town centre?

This may come as a surprise to many Geordies - but there are more than 100 other Newcastles around the world. Some of them have castles, some of them don’t. Some got their name from actual new fortresses built in their region, while others have other historic links. You’ll find scores of cities, towns and villages across the globe with the same name or whose name translates as ‘new castle’. There are more than 30 in Italy alone and a string of them across America. Other places you might find one include Japan, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Asia and Jamaica. One of Staffordshire’s parliamentary seats will be carved up under the final set of proposals to redraw the county’s political map. The Boundary Commission for England has published its final recommendations for new constituencies, which will see the number of Staffordshire MPs cut from 12 to 11. Under these proposals, which remain unchanged from the revised plan revealed last October, the Stone seat would be effectively abolished, with parts of it divided between four of its neighbouring constituencies. The town of Stone would become part of a new Stoke-on-Trent South and Stone seat, while Cheadle would move to the Staffordshire Moorlands constituency, which would expand to include the whole of the existing district. Loggerheads, Whitmore and Madeley would move to the Newcastle seat, while Eccleshall would go to Stafford. Stoke-on-Trent would retain three MPs, with Stoke-on-Trent Central and Stoke-on-Trent North remaining mostly unchanged – although the … [Read more...] about Staffordshire seat to be abolished under final Boundary Commission plans
