February 06, 2019 03:19 PM DER SPIEGEL: Mr. Sulzberger, you're one year into your role as the publisher of The New York Times. How much is resting on your shoulders? Sulzberger: This is a really difficult time for media. Journalists and journalism are under attack by political forces all over the globe. Trust in media is declining, the business models are changing. Anyone who cares about journalism should be very worried about this. But I don't feel a high degree of weight falling on me personally. DER SPIEGEL: The New York Times is 167 years old, you are the fifth generation of the Ochs Sulzberger family to take over as publisher. Are you afraid of screwing up? Sulzberger: In the last couple of years, The New York Times has managed to develop a real clear sense of our vision for what The Times will become in the future. And we have a strong team to pursue it: Dean Baquet is the best executive editor in the business, the newsroom is incredibly strong, our business team too. … [Read more...] about Interview with The New York Times Publisher A. Members of the Nebraska-based billionaire's family were in Dublin this week to discuss the matter. It has also emerged that Oak Hill, the New York venture capital firm that sold its 47pc share in telecoms firm Enet last year, will also play a part in the consortium's financing. The Irish-American businessman David McCourt, CEO of the consortium bid leader Granahan McCourt, will also invest money into the venture. Mr McCourt recently agreed a deal to sell his company's remaining stake in Enet to the State-backed Irish Infrastructure Fund (IIF), although no transaction value was disclosed. The telecoms company was recently valued at between €150m and €200m, suggesting a range of between €30m to €40m for the 22pc stake held between Granahan McCourt and Walter Scott. A delay, he said, would be proof that the EU doesn’t work. Critics included Renaud Dehousse, president of the European University Institute, who said: “If we have an agreement before the European election the next Parliament will have its hands tied — what do we have parliaments for, if not for budgets?” French En Marche lawmakers have complained about the budget timeline for the same reason. 50-50 chance: But will a deal be struck in time? Oettinger sees a “50-50” chance of the EU reaching a budget deal before the 2019 European election, he told reporters … [Read more...] about POLITICO Brussels Influence, presented by the New York Times: Budget deal odds — Angry Mexican investors — A message to you, Rudy
The New York Times: The West Hoped for Democracy in Turkey. Erdogan Had Other Ideas

In Western capitals a decade ago, Turkey’s now-paramount leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, held promise as a potential beacon of democracy for a region rife with religious conflict, Peter Goodman writes in an article for The New York Times. Turkey was a stalwart NATO ally bridging Europe and the volatile Middle East. As Mr. Erdogan sought to secure a place for his country in the ranks of the European Union, he presented himself as a moderate and modernizing Muslim leader for the post-9/11 age. He catered to perceptions that Turkey was becoming a liberal society governed by tolerance and the rule of law. But that was before Mr. Erdogan began amassing supreme powers, and before his brutal crackdown on dissent following an attempted coup two years ago. It was before Turkey descended into a financial crisis delivered in no small measure by his authoritarian proclivities and unorthodox stewardship of the economy. Whatever was left of the notion that Mr. … [Read more...] about The New York Times: The West Hoped for Democracy in Turkey. Erdogan Had Other Ideas
