Lorenzo Reyes USA TODAY Published 11:30 PM EDT Sep 16, 2019 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — John Dorsey nervously chewed his gum. It was the third quarter. The general manager of the Cleveland Browns peered through his binoculars inside the press box at MetLife Stadium. He set them down, then patted his fists. “Let’s go,” he mouthed, audible enough to hear from a few feet away. His team was up 13 points, but the New York Jets, down to their third quarterback, were battling back. They crept up to the Browns’ 13-yard line. It was fourth down. Cleveland’s defense clamped down. Turnover on downs. On the next play, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield flung a quick slant to receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in stride. Seconds later, it was over. Beckham jaunted 89 yards to a score that was all about redemption. Dorsey exhaled. The Cleveland Browns toppled an undermanned Jets team, 23-3, Monday night to claim their first victory of the season, and the first of rookie … [Read more...] about NFL Week 2: Cleveland Browns topple undermanned New York Jets

Nate Davis USA TODAY Published 7:29 AM EDT Jul 22, 2019 Take it from me, few things are more fun (if thankless) than the prediction business. So, with training camp doors swinging open, it's time to reveal my now-annual NFL record projections. The methodology? Using the latest pre-camp info, I predict all 256 regular-season games on the 2019 schedule, letting the chips fall where they may. From there, I add bonus prognostications for all 11 postseason contests. The results? Well, I've correctly forecast a Super Bowl eight months ahead of schedule (Seahawks over Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII) ... and also had some spectacular misses, including way-off-base outlooks for Seattle and Indianapolis just a year ago (both teams reached the postseason, of course, avoiding last-place finishes I envisioned). But 2018 produced extra fun when Seahawks LBs Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright kindly (and correctly) dismissed my predictive powers. Wagner even followed up to rib me after … [Read more...] about 2019 NFL record predictions: Will Patriots return to Super Bowl?
The National Football League suspended New York Jets tight end Chris Herndon for the first four games of the upcoming season on Friday and also banned two other players after run-ins with law-enforcement officers. Oakland Raiders offensive lineman Richie Incognito and former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Malik McDowell were suspended two games each for personal-conduct policy violations. Herndon's ban was for a violation of the NFL's substance abuse program after the 23-year-old pleaded guilty in January to a drink driving charge stemming from a June 2018 accident. Herndon received a four-game ban instead of the usual two because a woman at the scene suffered bodily harm due to the crash, according to a report on the NFL website. He will miss regular-season home contests against Buffalo and Cleveland and road games at New England and Philadelphia, and will be able to return for the Jets' October 13 home matchup against Dallas. Herndon made 39 receptions for 502 yards and four … [Read more...] about NFL gives Jets’ Herndon four-game suspension, bans two others
Jim Reineking USA TODAY Published 10:38 PM EDT May 15, 2019 It didn't take long for interim general manager Adam Gase to make his mark on the New York Jets. The Jets have agreed to trade linebacker Darron Lee to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for the 2020 sixth-round draft pick, according to multiple reports. Yahoo! Sports was the first to report the transaction. The move goes down just hours after the Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and named head coach Adam Gase as interim GM. Gase is entering his first season as Jets coach, while Maccagnan had been with the team for four years. Now, the team is jettisoning one of Maccagnan's draft picks. In three seasons with the Jets, Lee hadn't lived up to the expectations that come with being the No. 20 overall selection of a draft. OPINION: Jets make right call by unloading GM JETS' NEXT GM?
