Hāwera’s new year 7-13 school will launch at the beginning of 2023 using the existing high school buildings and temporary classrooms. Both Hāwera Intermediate and Hāwera High Schools will close at the end of the year, and the new school will open next year with 1000 students, the Ministry of Education has announced. Discussions about possible changes in the town's schooling began after a fire badly damaged the intermediate in 2015 and the high school needed extensive repairs. It has now been announced eight classrooms will be relocated from Hāwera Intermediate School in September and October, and further teaching spaces will be added, a statement from the Ministry said.
