CAR MAKERS can charge you a small fortune if you blow an LED bulb if the headlights come as one sealed unit. Volkswagen is the worst culprit with the highest cost for its Polo GTI model - setting owners back £846 just for the part. Other manufacturers that have set extortionate prices for their headlights include Seat. The VW sister brand charges £827 for its Ibiza's LED unit on the FR, FR Sport, Xcellence and Xcellence Lux models. Honda is just as bad, with Jazz EX and Sport owners having to spend £714 per sealed headlight. Fellow Japanese car maker Suzuki charges £684 for HID (High Intensity Discharge) units on the SZ5 trim of its Swift. The data was put together by consumer publisher WhatCar?, which looked into the cost of 13 popular small cars' headlights. Prices soar when replacing LED or HID headlights in comparison to halogen bulbs that cost as little as £4 on the Swift's SZ3 and SZT models. LED and HID bulbs are far brighter with a wider and whiter beam … [Read more...] about It’ll cost you up to £846 for a new headlight in these popular city cars – find out if your motor is one of them

EVERY single tradesman I know has the same problem: Time management. They’re grafting for 12 hours a day, juggling ten jobs, getting the apprentice out of bed, rushing to the butty van, hanging a set of doors as a favour for their nan’s neighbour… They’re not sat in some fancy riverside office with a pot plant in the corner and a secretary saying: “Oops, you’ve got this to do.” My carpet fitter didn’t get round to invoicing me for six weeks because he’s so swamped. So the last thing he’s going to be thinking about is getting his van serviced or giving it a lick of oil. Well, let me nudge you towards the new Mercedes Sprinter, because it’ll sort all that for you. It’s like having your own on-board PA. When the van thinks, ‘I’m going to need brake pads in 200 miles’, it pings a message to the dealer — and they contact you to get it booked in. Quality. Then there’s the self-cleaning … [Read more...] about New Mercedes Sprinter is the van every tradesman needs – because it can fix itself
IT’S the littlest hooligan in town, the newest member of the GTI line-up and Volkswagen’s Up! city car is just bristling with fun. It joins the Polo and the iconic Golf in a triumvirate of GTI power. The last time there were three models in the series was in 2005 and, like all newcomers, the Up! just wants to make its presence felt. Volkswagen’s GTI series is legendary and something of an exclusive club. Models are carefully modified by VW’s engineers for extra power, performance and thrills. The ride height is reduced and the suspension set-up adjusted but not too hard, so that the car is in contact with the road for the maximum time possible. Tyres are bigger and rims larger for longer road contact, particularly when cornering. Anti-roll bars are strengthened and the steering tuned for maximum response and agility – and that delightful and precise feeling you get when driving a performance car. Finally, the aerodynamics are tweaked – a splitter … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Golf, Polo and Up!

There are few names more synonymous with hot hatchbacks than Volkswagen GTI. This is the new, smallest member of the family – the Up! GTI. Though it’s really a successor to the brilliant Lupo GTI of the 2000s, Volkswagen is actually pitching it as the spiritual successor to the original, 1976 Golf GTI. The comparison isn’t as ridiculous as you might think either – with similar weight, dimensions and power figures, this pocket rocket aims for maximum fun rather than maximum speed – much the same as the iconic original. What’s new? Though it’s wrapped up in a standard Up! body, the GTI model gains some serious upgrades over the standard car. First off, there’s the engine – a 1.0-litre TSI, as featured in top-spec Up!s – but here tuned to produce 113bhp and 200Nm of … [Read more...] about First drive: The Volkswagen Up! is the junior GTI we’ve been craving
FAMILY portraits are naff. You sit there looking awkward with a side-parting you didn’t want and wearing matching clothes you don’t like. You do it for your mum. But here’s a family photo you’d be proud to hang on your wall. All three Volkswagen GTIs – that’s Golf, Polo and now Up! – in the first triple track test. The baby Up! (115hp) has more beans than the original Mk1 Golf GTI (110hp) – and all from a tiny 1-litre three-cylinder engine. I liked it a lot.Golf GTI THE icon. The halo. Rock solid, classy, stunning engine, Jeremy Clarkson owns one – so it’s got to be pretty decent, right? Almost a third of all Golf sales in the UK are “Performance” cars – that’s GTI, GTE (plug-in hybrid), GTD (diesel) and R (310hp, all-wheel drive and sublime). The car you see here is the Golf GTI Performance version. Essentially, it’s a GTI tricked up with a mechanical front diff, bigger brakes and another 15 … [Read more...] about VW Up! joins the GTI family so we took all three out for a track test
