Another 847 people have died with coronavirus in UK hospitals, taking the nationwide total beyond 14,000. The Department of Health announced the latest increase, with 14,576 people with COVID-19 - the disease caused by coronavirus - now confirmed to have died in hospital across the four home nations. The number of tests for the illness has also risen by 21,328 to 438,991, although this includes some people being tested more than once. There have now been 108,692 positive tests in the UK. Health authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also record their own daily figures, which may not tally with the government's total as they collate their numbers at different times throughout the day. COVID-19: UK’s coronavirus reproduction number remains below 1
The UK R number is still below one - between 0.7 and 0.9, official figures show. This week's R rate - or reproduction number - is largely unchanged from last week's, which scientists estimated was between 0.6 and 0.9. Today's figure means that on average, every 10 people with coronavirus will infect between seven and nine others. Although the R number is below one across England, it is between 0.7 and one in the North East and Yorkshire. Live COVID updates from the UK and across the world Advertisement This means it could soon rise above one and infections start growing again - instead of shrinking like elsewhere in the country. "Although the epidemic continues to decrease nationally, there may be more variation in transmission locally, with some indications that the rate of decline in infections could be slowing in some areas," the government's Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M) warned. UK COVID-19 lockdown provides boom towns for rats
Rats, and other members of the rodent family, have a lousy reputation. They crop up regularly in our everyday language to describe bleak situations and sentiments (Rats!, caught in a rat race, someone with rat-like features — you get the drift). Much-maligned, they're often associated with the plague — somewhat apposite given our current predicament. They seem to be omnipresent in the best of times, but now, they're having a, er, field day. The Boomtown Rats They're certainly more visible than in pre-pandemic times, but nothing to panic about — yet In London and other major cities across the UK, rat sightings have soared during the pandemic. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA), which represents 700 vermin catchers across the country, said its members reported a 51% hike in rodent activity during the first lockdown last spring, and a 78% increase in November after the next lockdown. Typically, rats avoid humans and make drains and sewers their homes. However, as … [Read more...] about UK COVID-19 lockdown provides boom towns for rats
Germany coronavirus: RKI chief says UK variant to dominate new infections
The UK coronavirus variant, also known as B117, could become the predominant strain in Germany if preventive measures aren't taken, health officials said on Friday. "B117 will soon be the predominant variant in Germany and then it will be even more difficult to keep the virus in check," Lothar Wieler, the head of the Robert Koch Institut (RKI) told reporters. "B117 is more contagious and even more dangerous in all age groups." The new variant makes up more than 40% of new coronavirus cases in Germany, compared to about 6% of cases four weeks ago, according to Wieler. The statement came as German Health Minister Jens Spahn once again urged caution in the easing of coronavirus restrictions. Spahn also touted pulling an "emergency break" if cases were to rise sharply. Such a break would temporarily halt the easing of restrictions, which have been part of a lockdown implemented in November. UK will have to live with ‘substantial’ Covid deaths as fight continues, expert warns
A leading scientist has warned Britain will have to continue living with a "substantial" death rate as the fight against coronavirus continues. Professor Andrew Hayward, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), said society will, however, "get back to normal" in time and the country has already seen the worst. He added that when the country was thrust into lockdown last year there was "conflicting advice" and experts continually failed to learn lessons as the pandemic progressed. "I think, you know, given the societal trade-offs, we are going to have to live with a degree of mortality that will be substantial," he told Times Radio. "I think it will get less over time as more people get vaccinated, and as more people get immune, and I do believe that we've been through the worst of this." Prof Hayward said he does not think new variants of Covid-19 will completely evade vaccine-related immunity. We want to hear from NHS & care staff - tell us … [Read more...] about UK will have to live with ‘substantial’ Covid deaths as fight continues, expert warns
