Is opposition to a hospital a sign of insanity in planning laws?
STUFF Environment Minister David Parker explains how the Resource Management Act will be reworked into three different parts. (Video first published February 2021) Dr Eric Crampton is chief economist with the New Zealand Initiative . Southern Cross Health Society is a member of the Initiative. OPINION: In Douglas Adams’s classic Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, Wonko the Sane realised that the world had gone mad. He had seen the instructions on the side of a packet of toothpicks. So he built a wall around his beachfront property, decorated the outside of it, and put up a sign welcoming visitors to the Outside of the Asylum. In a world going increasingly mad, I had thought New Zealand could do well by hanging similar signs at the airport. “Welcome to New Zealand: the Outside of the Asylum.” But would a sane place layer three years of consenting and appeals processes onto a hospital expansion during a pandemic? Dad arrested in toddler’s motel killing beat him to death with belt, police documents show
A man whose 2-year-old son died over the weekend at a budget motel plagued by a drumbeat of crime and safety incidents is accused of letting the toddler tumble down a flight of stairs, beating him with a belt and leaving him alone in a hotel room after he'd become unresponsive, police documents say. Anderson King, 25, was arrested on a count of second-degree cruelty to juveniles after his son, Kyland King, suffered fatal injuries at an Oyo Hotel on Gwenadele Ave. late Saturday, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Lt. Don Coppola. Coppola said police responded to a local hospital on Sunday night, where the boy had died of his injuries. An autopsy performed Monday by East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark found that Kyland died by homicide from multiple blunt force injuries. The boy's death is the second this year at the sprawling motel complex near Airline Highway, which along with some other local budget motels became a hotbed of crime and drug use in recent years amid a … [Read more...] about Dad arrested in toddler’s motel killing beat him to death with belt, police documents show
I charge my £50k electric BMW through my first floor window after being forced to REMOVE my outdoor power point
A DISAPPOINTED driver has been forced to charge his £50,000 electric BMW from his upstairs window - after his property agent asked him to remove his power point. Joe Keating from Rochdale , Greater Manchester , has to drag a long yellow cable through the window of his first-floor apartment just to charge his car . The motorist has suffered the chore since the managing agent of his rented home demanded he remove his car's power point . Joe had installed a plug for his flashy BMW next to his parking space to save on rising fuel costs and help tackle the climate crisis . Yet a letter from the agents Stevenson Whyte asked him to remove the power socket because Joe hadn't asked permission to install it. The Soviet Family
on the World Today IN the first years after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Russian leaders believed that by removing both the legal and economic bonds of family life they would make possible the development of “true monogamy” and “true family unity.” This conception underlay the Soviet Family Code of 1926, in which both marriage and divorce were made a matter of private agreement. Marriage was treated in law as a de facto relationship; registration of marriage, although encouraged, was not essential. Similarly, divorce could be accomplished merely by factual separation — although, again, the husband or wife was encouraged to notify the Bureau of Vital Statistics, at least bypostcard. The liberalization of marriage and divorce was part of a larger program leading to the ultimate “withering away of the family”— that is, of the family as a legal and economic institution. Inheritance was at first declared to be abolished, and was later reintroduced with very severe … [Read more...] about The Soviet Family
London must power up its post-Brexit tech boom
Over the last few days we have learned that Sir Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs at Meta, is moving back from America to the British capital. Alongside him will be the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri and very soon the head of marketing Alex Schultz as well. At this rate, it might just be simpler to move the whole company over to this side of the Atlantic. When they get here, they certainly won’t be short of internet-savvy neighbours. Alphabet, Apple, and Bloomberg, effectively a tech company dressed up as a media business, are all massively expanding their operations in London. Ironically, while the capital may have voted massively against our departure from the European Union, and staged every kind of demonstration against Brexit imaginable, it doesn’t seem to have stopped London from cementing its position as Europe’s key technology hub. It is racing ahead. And yet in truth, the city needs to turbo-charge its tech ambitions. If we finally get rid of the … [Read more...] about London must power up its post-Brexit tech boom
Pet owner slammed as waitress with drinks trips over dog lying on sidewalk
A waitress was caught on camera tripping over a dog while carrying pints of beer, causing her to drop everything on the sidewalk—and the internet has slammed the pet's owner for not taking greater care. In a post shared on TikTok, waitress Sinead Cartwright, known on the platform as sin.marie, plays a CCTV video of the restaurant she works at, showing her tripping over the dog, with a caption that says: "The [dog's] ok .....the beers [didn't] make it though." In the video, she can be seen coming out of the restaurant to serve the outdoor tables, holding a tray with two pints, when suddenly she trips over a dog lying in the middle of the sidewalk and the tray goes over. According to research by the PEW charitable trusts, in many parts of the United States taking a dog to the restaurant is illegal, unless it's a service dog. Only a few states have laws permitting dogs to join their owners on restaurant terraces. The video, which was first shared earlier in July, has gone … [Read more...] about Pet owner slammed as waitress with drinks trips over dog lying on sidewalk
