Grubhub promotion of free lunch frustrates some customers after app crash
A much-hyped promotional event for GrubHub went sour, with online reports of app crashes and other issues popping up almost immediately. The popular food-delivery service ran a "Free Lunch" promotion on Tuesday, exclusively for users in New York City. Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., hungry New Yorkers could input the code "FREELUNCH" to get $15 off of qualifying orders. Unfortunately, but perhaps unsurprisingly, the tantalizing offer did not appear to go smoothly for many. Around the time that the promotion went into effect, hordes of Twitter users began reporting technical difficulties, including app or website crashes and messages saying that the code did not work. Some tweets indicated that these difficulties began almost instantly. At 11:26 a.m. EST, the official GrubHub Twitter account appeared to respond to the widespread issues, saying, "y'all were hungry, huh? hang tight - we're on it." "On a real note, our restaurants and drivers are busier than EVER … [Read more...] about Grubhub promotion of free lunch frustrates some customers after app crash
City red tape will make a crash more likely – whatever the ‘experts’ say
Sir Vince Cable, the man who famously saw the financial crash coming years before anyone else. Prof Adam Tooze, the furiously busy Columbia University historian. Yanis Varoufakis, the leather jacket-wearing former Greek finance minister, Sir John Kay, the former dean of Oxford’s Said Business School, and a host of professors from Durham, the LSE and Nottingham. It would be hard to assemble a better list of the great and the good, nor a collection of individuals with more knowledge of the way the financial system works. When 58 of them all write to the Chancellor to warn him that plans to deregulate the City risk triggering another financial crash, people will inevitably listen. All the self-appointed "experts" would do is hold back the City at precisely the moment when it needs to reinvent itself following our departure from the European Union – and take the fight to Paris, Frankfurt and most of all New York. If we listen to them the British economy will lose a massive … [Read more...] about City red tape will make a crash more likely – whatever the ‘experts’ say
Party buses, robot deliveries and vacation bookings: Uber to roll out new features
Just ahead of summer, Uber plans on rolling out an array of new features for customers — including party bus booking options, robot food deliveries and new travel accommodations, according to the company's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. "Travel is coming back in a big way," Khosrowshahi told "CBS Mornings" on Tuesday. "I think people have been sitting at home too long and they want to get out there." Within the first three months of the year, Uber saw an 18% increase in the number of rides compared to the same time period last year despite a $5.6 billion net loss in revenue, the company announced in its first quarter earnings. As demand for rides increases, Khosrowshahi said the company will soon launch products like a new charter service. Customers on the Uber app will be able to specify the amount of passengers as well as the exact time and place where charter vehicles, party buses, passenger vans or coach buses are needed. "We'll give you the upfront fare, all of the … [Read more...] about Party buses, robot deliveries and vacation bookings: Uber to roll out new features
Trump says U.S. will try to stop Armenia, Azerbaijan war as nations urge calm
President Donald Trump has said his administration is looking "very strongly" at an outbreak of violence between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has left dozens dead and raised fears of a broader war between the Caucasus neighbors. At least 24 people have been killed in fighting that broke out over the weekend and continued into Monday, the Guardian reported. The two sides have long been at loggerheads over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is internationally-recognized Azeri land but is controlled by ethnic Armenians as the self-declared Republic of Artsakh. The two nations went to war between 1988–94 over the region, which broke away from Azerbaijan after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then there have been sporadic border clashes. This weekend's violence is the most significant since 2016, when hundreds of troops on both sides were killed during a spate of border fighting. Heavy artillery, helicopter gunships and … [Read more...] about Trump says U.S. will try to stop Armenia, Azerbaijan war as nations urge calm

In Georgia Senate race, Herschel Walker navigates allegations of past violent behavior
An athletic icon and business success, Herschel Walker has the type of background that Republicans hope will propel him to the U.S. Senate, where his presence could very well tip the balance of power in the deeply divided chamber. But Walker’s political ambitions have also revived scrutiny of another side of his record: allegations of domestic violence, physical threats and stalking. Walker has denied some of those accusations. Others he claims not to remember – a byproduct of his diagnosis with dissociative identity disorder, or D.I.D., a complex mental health condition characterized by some severe and potentially debilitating symptoms. Recruited and endorsed by former President Donald Trump, his longtime friend and mentor, Walker is expected to win next week’s Republican primary by a substantial margin. Some Republicans fear, however, that if Walker earns the GOP nomination, these claims could catch up with him come November – when he would likely face formidable Democratic … [Read more...] about In Georgia Senate race, Herschel Walker navigates allegations of past violent behavior
Almost 43,000 US road deaths recorded last year – the highest in 16 years
Almost 43,000 people died on US roads last year, the highest number in 16 years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found there was a 10.5% increase in the number of deaths in 2021 compared to 2020, with 42,915 losing their life - nearly 118 people every day. The jump was the largest increase since the NHTSA began collecting the fatality data in 1975. The Governors Highway Safety Association blamed the increase on dangerous behaviour such as speeding, driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs, and distracted driving. They said "roads [have been] designed for speed instead of safety." Advertisement Since returning to the roads after the pandemic, people in the US drove about 325 billion miles last year, 11.2% more than in 2020, which contributed to the increase. Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg has urged state and local governments, drivers and safety advocates to join in the effort to reverse the rising death … [Read more...] about Almost 43,000 US road deaths recorded last year – the highest in 16 years
