HOMEOWNERS could get a payout of up to £50,000 if there's a fault with their new-build home under a new watchdog. The new New Homes Quality Board (NHQB) has been launched to work on setting out a code of practice that developers and builders must abide by. If firms fail to follow the rules, home buyers will be able to report them to a new ombudsman service, which will have the power to investigate claims and award compensation if necessary. Unfortunately, the New Homes Ombusdman Service (NHOS) will not cover cases retrospectively. It will only cover homes reserved from the date a developer registers with the board and signs up to the new arrangements. Amy Fenn, 24, and fiancé George Watts-Sturrock, 32, bought the £265,000 starter home under the flagship Government scheme. But their joy turned to misery with a seemingly never-ending list of “snags”. The couple claim there was damp and mould, uneven walls and unfinished stairs. Amy Fenn, 24, and fiancé George Watts-Sturrock, 32, claim to have had endless issues with their "nightmare" new-build - including damp, mould, uneven walls and even a burst water tank and two floods. The pair bought the detached three-bed property in Norfolk in 2018. It was advertised as being part of "a superb collection of stunning homes" by Suffolk builder Hopkins & Moore. It should have been their dream home, but they say it has been "a nightmare". It started with mould in the first week, and then the pair noticed damp, uneven walls and that the stairs were unfinished.
