For the past three years, England women have been reaping the fruits of professionalism. Gone are the days of combining jobs as firefighters, vets and plumbers with gruelling training schedules. The results? The Red Roses are on an unstoppable 18-match winning streak and are favourites to win a third consecutive Six Nations Grand Slam . While the rest of the women’s game ponders the move towards professionalism, England have ploughed ahead, leaving other nations trailing in their wake. Head coach Simon Middleton’s side have not lost a match since the summer of 2019. With the Women’s Six Nations now upon us – and more than three years since England’s players dropped their second careers to become full-time athletes – Telegraph Sport delved into the former lives of four key players to explore how their livelihoods before professional rugby intrinsically link to their skill set on the pitch. Scottish Power boss urges £1,000 bill cut for 10 million
Simon Jack @BBCSimonJack on Twitter Published 6 days ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The boss of Scottish Power has warned that millions of customers face an horrific winter unless there is a major government intervention in energy firms. Keith Anderson, chief executive of Scottish Power, told the BBC that another expected rise in energy bills in October to between £2,500 and £3,000 a year could see huge losses for suppliers and many customers unable to pay their bills. He warned regulator Ofgem that setting the new price cap too low could risk suppliers collapsing or the foreign owned firms leaving the market. Chancellor Rishi Sunak told the BBC: "Where we can make a difference, particularly for those who really need our help, that's what we're going to do." Energy bills shake-up plans to avoid price shocks
By Dearbail Jordan Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Household energy bills could change every three months under new plans aimed at avoiding price shocks. Currently gas and electricity bills are updated every six months. The plans, proposed by the energy regulator Ofgem, would mean price falls and rises would be passed on to customers more quickly. Biden and Trump both face tests in next stretch of primaries: The Note
The TAKE with Rick Klein A new phase of primary season starts this week -- and it won't just be former President Donald Trump whose sway is tested as voting expands into battlegrounds that are likely to make or break a majority. Amid all the attention on vicious Republican primaries and Trump's impact, Democrats are set to make some of their own major decisions. That includes a few choice races where President Joe Biden has chosen to step in, and some others where his brand of politics comes into play. The Senate race in Pennsylvania is a neat encapsulation of the potential directions Democrats could take. The news Sunday that Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, the leading candidate in recent polls, was hospitalized with a stroke puts more attention on the burly, progressive former small-town mayor who has campaigned extensively against the idea of "Joe Manchin Democrats." Fetterman is opposed by a young, gay Black state lawmaker, and a House member and Marine Corps veteran … [Read more...] about Biden and Trump both face tests in next stretch of primaries: The Note
A closer look at Amir Khan as one of Britain’s most entertaining boxers retires
Amir Khan hangs up his gloves safe in the knowledge he is one of the best boxers the UK has produced, bringing excitement and drama to the global stage and inspiring countless British Asians along the way. Khan won Olympic silver as a teenager, was world champion at 22 and unified the light-welterweight division before his 25th birthday as his lightning reflexes and blurring hand speed overwhelmed many formidable opponents. He might have achieved more – it seems peculiar his talents did not transcend to winning world titles in more than one division – but a suspect chin and a waning enthusiasm meant he spent the last decade of his career in purgatory. Yet the legacy he leaves is more than the belts won or the millions banked, having been one of the few fighters from these isles to truly ‘crack’ the United States. At his zenith he split opinion like few others but he juggled boxing with several philanthropic endeavours and did not shirk speaking about difficult … [Read more...] about A closer look at Amir Khan as one of Britain’s most entertaining boxers retires
