Elon Musk unveiled the design of his company’s Neuralink brain implant and the robot surgeon used to implant it which is hoped will help people suffering from paralysis. Mr Musk showed off the latest version of the device , which is initially expected to be used to treat brain injuries and disability, at an event on Friday. In a livestreamed demonstration the entrepreneur showed off a pig, named Gertrude, which he said had had a Neuralink implant for two months. The company has also been testing on monkeys and rats, he has said at earlier events . “As you can see, a healthy and happy pig,” he said. A graphic showed the implant’s ability to predict the movements taken by a pig on a treadmill to a “high degree of accuracy,” Mr Musk claimed. Another graphic showed electrodes influencing neurons. In humans, Mr Musk said the device would connect to an app on a mobile phone using Bluetooth, with a range of five to ten metres. It would have a full-day battery life and charge … [Read more...] about Elon Musk reveals functioning brain-reading implant Neuralink in ‘healthy’ pig

A look at Elon Musk’s ever-expanding business empire
With his deal to take over Twitter, Elon Musk could soon be in control of the communications medium used by the world's most influential leaders – in addition to being at the helm of the world's most valuable carmaker and the rocket building firm that has revitalized the US space program. All at the same time. It is rare for one executive to divide his or her time between so many ventures. In fact, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who simultaneously ran payments platform Square (which is now called Block), was criticised for not being able to focus his attention full-time on Twitter. He stepped down from Twitter last year. Musk has a tendency to launch headfirst into initiatives important to him – though he also delegates his work, relying on teams of leaders to carry out his vision. Musk has a habit of pouring his money into ventures he sees as “existential”. An early pioneer of the online payments space, Musk took the earnings from PayPal's sale to eBay and funnelled it into two … [Read more...] about A look at Elon Musk’s ever-expanding business empire
Elon Musk’s most bizarre predictions – including ‘million-strong’ Mars SpaceX colony by 2050
ELON Musk has had plenty of bonkers ideas down the years – some more bonkers than others. Among other things, the billionaire Tesla chief believes he can set up a colony on Mars and cure obesity all within the next few decades. Traffic jams eliminated by tunnel systems Elon Musk has claimed that he will put an end to traffic jams by digging a network of tunnels under major cities. His argument is that traffic will be less congested if it flows using an elaborate matrix of subterranean roads. That led him to found his tunnel-digging firm, The Boring Company , in California in 2016. The firm has been focusing on infrastructure and tunnel construction , and primarily looks at how tunnels can help to ease traffic in Los Angeles. Elon Musk reveals how long he’ll stay at Tesla after fans worry he’ll leave for Twitter full time
ELON Musk has revealed how long he plans to man the wheel at Tesla amid rumors he'll name himself interim CEO of Twitter when the acquisition deal closes. Musk currently serves as the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Neuralink, and adding a leadership role at Twitter to his laundry list of titles might come at another company's expense. During a keynote interview at the Financial Times Future of the Car conference , Musk told the audience, and the world, that he plans to stay at Tesla for "as long as I can be useful." Musk joined the Tesla team when he invested $7.5million in the company in 2004 - he later put up more of his own cash and led a successful search for more investors. This hi-tech helmet could become a Fitbit for the brain
Technology’s quest to measure, understand and control everything about our lives has stretched from our movement, diet and fitness levels, to our travel, shopping habit, money and even our DNA. Now we can add brain activity to the list. Bryan Johnson, 42, is the founder and chief executive of Kernel, a company which is trying to downsize the expensive, cumbersome brain scanning machines currently used for neuroscience. Johnson, who suffered for a decade with chronic depression, sees the brain as an untapped source of data and a gap in human understanding of the world. “We can measure and quantify pretty much everything in the known universe, including distant stars, but also hyper-local things like steps and calories, even down to proteins and saturated fat. One of the only things we cannot measure in the universe is our brain or mind. “If you can really quantify the mind and the brain at scale, at the individual and collective level, we will finally be able to understand, with … [Read more...] about This hi-tech helmet could become a Fitbit for the brain
Elon Musk wants to plug a microchip into your brain: here’s why
In a science fiction series known as The Culture , Scottish novelist Iain M Banks dreams up a future, interstellar society in which humans make advancements in intelligence with a brain-computer interface known as “neural lace” implanted in their skulls. For Elon Musk, the billionaire chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX and self-admitted fan of neural lace, taking a crack at his own version seemed a no-brainer, leading to the launch of a secretive firm in 2016 called Neuralink that would explore the technology’s potential. Four-years on, and Musk is ready to show the world his plans to hack the human brain . On Friday, the entrepreneur will unveil a demonstration of a prototype device that could one day be placed inside our skulls, making us part-human, part-cyborg. His reasons to do this are two-fold. At one level, he sees an implanted medical chip working as a brain-computer interface that could help us better understand neurological diseases and treat them. At a deeper … [Read more...] about Elon Musk wants to plug a microchip into your brain: here’s why
Elon Musk says he wired a monkey’s brain to play video games
A start-up founded by tech billionaire Elon Musk has implanted a microchip into a monkey’s brain so that it can play video games with its mind. Neuralink - set up four and a half years ago to develop “brain-computer interface” technology - is testing its systems on primates but hopes eventually to offer them to humans. In a discussion on private social app Clubhouse, Mr Musk said the company had “a monkey with a wireless implant in their skull with tiny wires, who can play video games with his mind”. He added: “You can’t see where the implant is and he’s a happy monkey. We have the nicest monkey facilities in the world. We want them to play mind-Pong with each other.” Neuralink's device works by connecting small chips to an individual's brain though thousands of microscopic threads. They enter the brain through four holes drilled in the skull and can monitor “neural spikes”. The company aims to eventually treat brain diseases and even allow humans to merge with artificial … [Read more...] about Elon Musk says he wired a monkey’s brain to play video games
