As with most films, I assumed I might watch Roma, the 10-time Oscar nominated film by Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón, in one single go. Intrigued by the hype and excited by the reviews, my flatmate and I bookmarked the night of its Netflix release in the calendar, and at 8pm on Friday December 14, settled down to watch. By 8.30pm, we were both asleep. It seems crucial here to point out here that we are both 25-year-old women in good health, that neither of us have managed to fall asleep before midnight, even willfully, since 2001, and we were neither full nor drunk. Olivia Colman's The Favourite and Netflix's Roma will lead the way at this year's Oscars after receiving 10 nominations each. Norwich-born Colman earned a nod for her starring role in regal black comedy The Favourite meanwhile Alfonso Cuaron's intimate family drama Roma - hailed as a masterpiece by critics - became the first Netflix film to receive a Oscar nomination for Best Picture. In the real world, it is becoming increasingly hard to take our eyes off Netflix itself. The TV streaming giant revealed last night that it signed up almost 9 million new subscribers in the final three months of 2018, a record number. What’s more, its share of our attention keeps increasing: in the US, one in every 10 TV minutes is now spent watching Netflix.
