Disney is rebooting "Home Alone" and "Night at the Museum" for its new TV streaming service, which launches in the US in November and is intended to rival Netflix. The beloved and high-grossing film franchises were acquired by Disney during its takeover of 21st Century Fox. Chief executive Bob Iger said Disney was "focused on leveraging Fox's vast library of great titles... for example reimagining 'Home Alone,' 'Night at the Museum,' 'Cheaper by the Dozen,' and 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' for a new generation on Disney+." "Nothing is more important to us than getting this right," he added in an earnings call Tuesday. He did not clarify whether the new versions would be feature films or television programs. The three "Home Alone" films that received theatrical releases together grossed $914.8 million at the global box office, not adjusted for inflation. The 1990 original, in which eight-year-old Kevin McCallister is accidentally left behind when his family goes on vacation and must defend … [Read more...] about Disney to reboot ‘Home Alone’ for new TV streaming service
Netflix new releases streaming
Netflix shares dropped roughly 11 per cent when Wall Street opened today, as bleary-eyed investors reacted to a disappointing set of second-quarter results. The streaming firm posted a 26 per cent rise in revenue to $4.9bn (£3.9bn), but added just 2.7m worldwide subscribers, well below its 5m forecast. Netflix blamed the figures on price rises in the US and the UK earlier this year, and admitted its “content slate” had not delivered as many new subscribers as hoped. The Silicon Valley firm, which has enjoyed vast success with original shows such as Stranger Things and The Crown, burst through the 150m subscriber mark, and the results are not all doom and gloom. But the figures have undoubtedly sparked jitters among analysts amid concerns the company is starting to lose its shine. So, as new competitors close in, what’s next for the king of streaming? Netflix has announced that a free Pokemon Go-style game based on its zombie TV show Stranger Things will be released in 2020. The mobile game will integrate Google Maps so players can "explore The Upside Down hidden around them in their daily travels and work with fellow fans to fight back its emerging evils." The streaming powerhouse is looking to expand its original shows into other media, and the idea for a Stranger Things video game sprang up after its successful first season, Netflix director of interactive gaming Chris Lee said during a panel discussion at the premier industry gathering known as E3. "It was like music to my ears," Lee said. "We are actually hoping to bring people into our franchises through games." Stranger Things writers are gamers, as are the show's characters and many of its fans, so a full-blown title building on adventures in the series was a natural fit, according to show writer Paul Dichter. The game aims to stay true to the original … [Read more...] about Netflix to release free Stranger Things mobile game in 2020
