More info Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is currently mulling over plans to end the ban on fracking, as a British Geological Survey paper examining the safety of drilling is set to be delivered to him soon. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UK has explored numerous ways to boost its energy security, as experts fear that Russia’s move to slash gas flowing into Europe could have ramifications on the UK as well. To safeguard itself from major shocks, Britain has rapidly scaled up green energy projects like wind, solar and nuclear, while also giving the green light on North Sea … [Read more...] about Energy crisis: Frost calls to ‘drop mad dash’ to net zero to avoid ‘rationing’ this winter
Net zero ready house plans
Energy rationing is inevitable without a fundamental rethink of net zero
An announcement on fracking is coming next week, says Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business and Energy Secretary. That will be an important decision. But it is only part of the picture. Nothing is more vital to a modern economy than copious supplies of energy. But the truth is that neither we nor the EU have an energy policy that can actually deliver it. Fundamentally misconceived, exposed by the Covid switch-off/switch-on of the world economy and then the war in Ukraine , our approach needs a rethink. Without that, all ministers can do is put in place increasingly complex and expensive palliatives until, in due course, they are overwhelmed by events. What is going wrong? To understand properly we have to look at the fundamentals. Let’s take the 2050 net zero target as a given for the moment. There are only two ways of getting there. The first is to put in place by 2050 systems of energy supply that are both carbon-free and capable of generating the energy we need at a cost which … [Read more...] about Energy rationing is inevitable without a fundamental rethink of net zero

Green Surpise
Illustration by Pat Oliphant IF there is any issue on which this year's presidential contenders seem stereotyped, it is the environment. George W. Bush is seen as a pro-business oilman who would let polluters run amok, Al Gore as a fanatical tree-hugger who would terrorize industry with onerous ecological restrictions. Political stereotypes usually arise from rhetoric, and in both candidates' speeches can be found comments that support these standard perceptions. But their records are a different matter. What the nominees have actually done demonstrates that Bush is hardly a foe of conservation and Gore is hardly an environmental extremist. Both are more centrist on environmental issues than is commonly assumed. And either, if elected, may have a considerable surprise in store for us—a pleasant, green surprise. Each man's image gives him the chance to play against type with a "Nixon goes to China" initiative in which he would propose as President exactly the sorts of reforms he … [Read more...] about Green Surpise
Sneezing enough to frighten next-door’s cat: the day I became a Covid-19 statistic
JASON DORDAY/STUFF Dr Api Talemaitoga from Cavendish Doctors explains how to test yourself for Covid-19 with a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). It's quick, easy and practically painless. Jenny Nicholls is a Waiheke-based writer and columnist. OPINION: That extra thin red line on a Covid-19 rapid antigen test changes everything, as some 1,320,000 New Zealanders know by now. On June 19, I tested positive; the same day, Our World in Data linked 10 deaths (a rolling average) to Covid-19 in New Zealand. Yes, that’s me on the OWID site’s interactive graph “ Daily New Confirmed Covid-19 Cases ” – a fraction of a pixel on a line heading down, before reversing on June 23 and zagging up again like a demon rollercoaster. Despite a mixture of wishful thinking, public complacency, and Government policy, the pandemic is alive and well, and still taking a heavy toll. In the United States last year, for those aged 45-54, Covid was the No 1 cause of death. “The virus that causes … [Read more...] about Sneezing enough to frighten next-door’s cat: the day I became a Covid-19 statistic
I Am the Grass
BECAUSE I love my wife and daughter, and because I want them to believe I am a good man, I have never talked to them about my year as a grunt with the 25th Infantry in Vietnam. I cannot tell my thirteen-year-old that once, drunk on Ba Muoi Ba beer, I took a girl her age into a thatched-roof hooch in Tay Ninh City and did her on a bamboo mat. I cannot tell my wife, who paints watercolors of songbirds, that on a search-and-destroy mission I emptied my M-60 machine gun into two beautiful white egrets that were wading in the muddy water of a paddy. I cannot tell them how I sang "Happy Trails" as I shoved two wounded Viet Cong out the door of a medevac chopper hovering twenty feet above the tarmac of a battalion aid station. I cannot tell them how I lay in a ditch and used my M-60 to gun down a skinny, black-haired farmer I thought was a VC, nearly blowing his head off. I cannot tell them how I completed the decapitation with a machete, and then stuck his head on a pole on top of a mountain … [Read more...] about I Am the Grass
Top Mob boss reveals how the Mafia survived for so long and why it’ll never be the same again
A former Mafia boss has opened up on life in the Mob, why it fell apart and what his experiences can teach young people here in the UK thinking of joining street gangs today. Michael Franzese, 71, was a senior ranking ‘Caporegime’ in the Colombo crime gang which, alongside the Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese and Bonnano families, dominated New York for much of the 20 th century. He notoriously masterminded a huge gasoline tax swindle which netted his crew a staggering $9million each week and he was even portrayed in Martin Scorsese ’s gangster classic ‘Goodfellas’. But when the ‘Prince of the Mafia’ did the unthinkable and renounced the mob in 1995, he became one of the few men to walk away from ‘that life’ and live to tell the tale. As he prepares to embark on a tour across the UK, Franzese sat down with Metro.co.uk to discuss life in the Mafia, what made it so successful, what eventually brought it crashing down and why it will never be the same again. Although … [Read more...] about Top Mob boss reveals how the Mafia survived for so long and why it’ll never be the same again
Our Auntie BBC loves all 150 genders… but not the over-60s
WE have the most inclusive state broadcaster in the world. The citizens of China, who can basically only watch one channel, of pandas procreating, would kill for such diversity. ’Allo ’Allo , Dad’s Army and The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air , which all first aired on the Beeb , were given sensitivity warnings when they appeared on streaming services. Doctor Who’s Time Lord regenerated so much he became a she, and EastEnders sermonises so much about sexism it’s down to its last 27 viewers. A couple of years ago the Beeb considered banning the “colonial” song Rule, Britannia! from Last Night Of The Proms , and last week Aunty used the phrase “pregnant people” in its coverage of the (appalling) US ruling against abortions. Most recently, the BBC has hired non-binary inclusion consultants to teach staff there are at least 150 different genders. Employees are being urged to declare their pronouns on emails with a list which has expanded to include newly invented ones … [Read more...] about Our Auntie BBC loves all 150 genders… but not the over-60s
“My Lover And Companion”: Women Explain Why They Buy Male Sex Dolls
A decade ago, Samantha (who requested a pseudonym to protect her privacy), 45, experienced a tragedy. Her husband was involved in a serious car crash that resulted in him becoming paralyzed from the neck down and permanently disabled. “Any other woman in my position could have left him when they knew they would never have a sex life again. But I stayed by his side because I love him,” she said. It wasn’t easy. “I mourned the loss of our sex life — not just the sex, but the intimacy that came with it,” she said. “There were times when I sat and cried my heart out.” Her husband was upset to see his wife struggling, so he suggested she find a friend with benefits. She contemplated the idea, but eventually decided not to do it. “I was worried that if I got a fuck buddy, feelings could become involved,” she said. “And if that happened, our relationship wouldn't survive.” Her marriage suffered regardless. The couple, who live in Australia, began sleeping in separate beds … [Read more...] about “My Lover And Companion”: Women Explain Why They Buy Male Sex Dolls
