Net zero house plans
Energy rationing is inevitable without a fundamental rethink of net zero
An announcement on fracking is coming next week, says Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business and Energy Secretary. That will be an important decision. But it is only part of the picture. Nothing is more vital to a modern economy than copious supplies of energy. But the truth is that neither we nor the EU have an energy policy that can actually deliver it. Fundamentally misconceived, exposed by the Covid switch-off/switch-on of the world economy and then the war in Ukraine , our approach needs a rethink. Without that, all ministers can do is put in place increasingly complex and expensive palliatives until, in due course, they are overwhelmed by events. What is going wrong? To understand properly we have to look at the fundamentals. Let’s take the 2050 net zero target as a given for the moment. There are only two ways of getting there. The first is to put in place by 2050 systems of energy supply that are both carbon-free and capable of generating the energy we need at a cost which … [Read more...] about Energy rationing is inevitable without a fundamental rethink of net zero

Published 4 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A housing company is hoping to win support for plans to build 1,700 homes in a village by inviting locals to look over its ideas. Dudsbury Homes says it wants to create an "intimate community" in Alderholt on the Dorset-Hampshire border, which according to the last census currently has a population of 3,262. But locals have voiced worries over infrastructure and over-development. The developer is holding a public meeting at the village hall on Friday. Dudsbury Homes says it wants to ensure its proposals for Alderholt Meadows can "carefully and collaboratively evolve" before they are submitted to Dorset Council. But Tanya Wynyard, landlady of the Churchill Arms pub in the village, said the meeting was nothing more than a "tickbox exercise to get the village on side". Inside Lisbon’s housing crisis
Can you store 86 years of someone's life in a 10m2 room? Nazaré Jorge can. For the last three years, the Portuguese pensioner has been living in a tiny room provided by the municipality of Lisbon. Unable to pay the rent of the apartment she had shared for four decades with her aunt, she was evicted in 2019. She was escorted out of the flat by police, and later allocated the room she now calls home. There are no wardrobes, so clothes, medicines, photos and all her belongings are kept in plastic bags scattered around the bed. She spent her 84th birthday in front of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing to demand proper housing. On a very hot June morning, I spent almost three hours listening to her story and filming the squalid room in which she now lives. Just some weeks before, I had been put on the story that can be summed up as "Lisbon´s Housing Crisis". Portugal's, but especially the capital's, property market is now what analysts call one of Europe's … [Read more...] about Inside Lisbon’s housing crisis
Selling social housing to be explored by States
By John Fernandez Published 4 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The possibility of selling social housing in Guernsey is to be explored after approval by the States. It could lead to affordable and social accommodation being bought for 75% of its value. Chief Minister Deputy Peter Ferbrache said he put forward the proposal to "give the opportunity to current tenants to buy new and old stock". The politician with responsibility for social housing Deputy Peter Roffey labelled the plan "borderline wicked". He said he believed it was the right thing to do to allow people to purchase 75% of new Guernsey Housing Association properties - but that extending it to all social housing was "just wrong". Civil servants from the Employment and Social Security Committee, the Environment and Infrastructure Committee and the Policy and Resources Committee will now … [Read more...] about Selling social housing to be explored by States
Rishi Sunak warned he has five months to get ‘house in order’ by furious business chiefs
Rishi Sunak has been warned he has five months to get his “house in order” by furious business chiefs. Shevaun Haviland, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said firms face a “perfect storm” of spiralling costs. She demanded no more business tax rises before a 2024 election. And she called for an “urgent review” of the list of shortage jobs exempt from post-Brexit immigration rules. She said: "Increasing costs of raw materials over last summer, supply chain and shipping issues, problems in recruiting people, and by this March, spiralling energy prices. “It really is the perfect storm for businesses, firmly putting the brakes on recovery." She added: "The Spring Statement was a missed opportunity. We saw some support for business, but the lack of a clear strategic direction meant it did not give clarity or confidence. “This has to change; we are on limited time. “The Government has until the autumn budget to reset, rethink and get their house in … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak warned he has five months to get ‘house in order’ by furious business chiefs
