Co-leader Patrick Harvie said it would be the only option if both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Supreme Court block the request. Opposition parties have criticised the strategy and its timing. It comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last week proposed holding a referendum on 19 October 2023. The UK government said it would examine the first minister's proposals, but stressed that its position that "now is not the time" for another referendum had not changed. It has also said that it is "clear" that the constitution is reserved to Westminster. Ninth-graders at four Baton Rouge high schools dominate ranks of new dual enrollment program
Four Baton Rouge high schools, led by Liberty High, are home to the bulk of the ninth-graders who have signed up this fall for new dual enrollment courses meant to set teenagers early on the path to college . Liberty, Glen Oaks, McKinley and Tara high schools have a total of 728 students registered so far to take college-level courses being offered by Baton Rouge Community College. They account for two-thirds of the nearly 1,100 students in Baton Rouge who’ve put these courses on their schedules for the fall as part of the school district’s Pathways to Bright Futures initiative. On the flip side, seven high schools — two of them small alternative schools — each have fewer than 50 ninth-graders participating in the program. The school with the least participation is Baton Rouge Magnet High, where 16 ninth-graders have signed up, followed by Woodlawn High with 27 students participating. They are by far the largest high schools in the school district. Signups so far represent … [Read more...] about Ninth-graders at four Baton Rouge high schools dominate ranks of new dual enrollment program
Doctors told me I was ‘just fat’ – my serious medical condition was missed
As soon as I got my lipoedema diagnosis last year, tears rolled down my cheeks. For years, doctors told me that I was ‘just fat’. But finally a medical professional had confirmed my disproportionately large legs were a medical condition – an extremely painful chronic disease that causes fibrotic fat to accumulate in the lower part of the body, over which the patient has very little to zero control. It was the validation I’d waited nearly 30 years to receive. When I was 12 years old, I began noticing distinct changes in my body. I quit wearing shorts or swimsuits and avoided all activities where I was expected to show my legs. Whenever I looked at them, I felt deeply ashamed and disgusted with myself. By age 14, I was so ashamed of my big legs that I convinced my parents to let me have a free consultation with a plastic surgeon. Back then, I was 5 foot 6 inches (170cm) tall and weighed roughly 135 pounds (61kg), the majority of which were within my legs. I was so … [Read more...] about Doctors told me I was ‘just fat’ – my serious medical condition was missed
Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?
The world is currently witnessing biodiversity loss at a rate and scale unprecedented in human history. Over 1 million species are at risk of extinction. Many are disappearing before we have had a chance to discover them. Climate change, pollution and disappearing habitats are among the forces that have pushed nature toward a cliff edge. The situation is so severe that scientists say we are facing the " sixth mass die-off " — the scale of which has not been seen since the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago. Yet 2022 presents a window of opportunity, with the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Canada set to bring together world leaders to discuss a road map to deal with the crisis in nature. In our latest Global Ideas web special we take a deep dive into why protecting biodiversity is so critical, and what the concrete and effective solutions are to tackling the problem. 'Biodiversity loss is the greatest threat to humanity' What impact does … [Read more...] about Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?

Buy locally-made jewellery to avoid Russian conflict gold
“If your jewellery isn’t made in New Zealand, there’s no way of knowing where your gold was mined,” said Ash Hilton from Good Gold and Ash Hilton Jewellery. The United States, UK, Canada and Japan are moving to ban imports of Russian gold in a bid to hamper the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine, but New Zealand has not signalled it will follow suit. A spokesperson for Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said New Zealand was aware of the plan, and was looking at all options to further pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime, and cut off its financial system from international markets. But for buyers who want to avoid inadvertently buying jewellery made from Russian gold, things are tricky because many jewellers do not disclose the ultimate sources of the gold in their bling. ‘Grave concerns’ for future of health workforce amid staffing crisis
JASON DORDAY/STUFF Health Minister Andrew Little and Associate Health Minister (Māori Health) Peeni Henare have formally launched two new health entities at AUT in Manukau, south Auckland. There are “grave concerns” for the future of the health workforce and “urgent” action is needed to address the staffing crisis , a surgeons' group says. The Association of General Surgeons has sent an open letter to Health Minister Andrew Little, saying the staffing shortfall is “profoundly reducing” doctors’ ability to deliver care. President Dr Rowan French, said both acute and planned surgeries in public hospitals had been reduced as a result. “Most hospitals are already close to, or at over 100% occupancy. This cannot be dismissed as ‘just a winter problem’, as a number of hospitals were at 100% occupancy in January.” READ MORE: Covid-19 Australia: Nurses say military is needed to alleviate Victoria's hospital crisis Covid-19: 100 more emergency doctors needed to deal … [Read more...] about ‘Grave concerns’ for future of health workforce amid staffing crisis
