SPRINGFIELD – Since March 2014, 20 state-licensed skilled-care nursing homes have closed for financial reasons, while many of those continuing to serve the state’s neediest elderly populations face staffing shortages and operating deficits caused by diminishing state government investment. Nursing home advocates warn that the industry is already in crisis, and a continuance of this trend could mean an unavailability of care for Illinois’ aging population within a decade. “These facilities are closing, and I can tell you more are going to close,” said Pat Comstock, executive director of the Health Care Council of Illinois, a nursing home advocacy group. “It’s happening because we have a situation in Illinois where they can no longer financially survive.” The pace of closures has quickened in recent years, with five skilled-care nursing facilities – those that house the sickest and most vulnerable – closing from 2014 to 2016, … [Read more...] about ‘Already in crisis:’ Report says Medicaid funding shortfalls causing nursing homes to close

SPRINGFIELD – At what age should it be legal for a child to be at home alone, or to be caring for younger siblings? In Illinois, it’s currently 14, the strictest such law in the nation for more than 25 years. One Republican lawmaker wants that changed to 12. “This law came into place decades ago in response to a case where a couple left the country with their two children at home,” said Rep. Joe Sosnowski, of Rockford. “As it sometimes happens with these issues in legislatures, lawmakers overreact and set a precedent that’s too restrictive.” Sosnowski is sponsoring House Bill 2334, which would lower the state’s legal age limit for leaving children unsupervised to 12. The bill passed unanimously out of the House Judiciary - Criminal Committee in early March. The case on which Illinois’ law is formed involved a St. Charles couple who left their 9- and 4-year-old girls at home to vacation in Mexico in 1992. Two days into the trip, a … [Read more...] about Should state allow 12-year-olds to be home alone?

A mum-of-five faces up to 20 years behind bars after being accused of abandoning her children to go on holiday where she took selfies sunning herself on the beach. Chrystal Walraven, 28, reportedly said 'she needed to get away with everything that was happening at home' when she left the children at the filthy home. Her eldest child, a 12-year-old boy, was left with a child aged just 15 months – who authorities say appeared dead in her crib with a blanket over her mouth. When they entered the property that had an 'overwhelming odour' of feces and rubbish. The officers only discovered the little one was alive when an officer removed the blanket and rubbed her, prompting her to take a visible breath and move. Officers knocked on the door of the Texas property on August 29 2018 and a 10-year-old boy answered the door, claiming everything was okay. Walraven's two daughters, six and three, seemed they had not bathed in days. Inside the home police found a dirty diaper in a closet, … [Read more...] about Mum ‘abandoned 5 children in filthy home while she took selfies on holiday’
