Do you trust your child to do their OWN Covid tests? Pupils swab themselves at school as nurse watches on – despite proof rapid tests only work if they are administered properly

· January 8, 2021 ·

Pupils have been swabbing themselves as school nurses watch on despite proof rapid tests only work if they are administered properly.Students at Oasis Academy in Coulsdon, Surrey, were sent the kits on Monday and given instructions by nurses on how to carry out the tests themselves.Only vulnerable children or those whose parents are key workers are allowed to attend lessons in person during the latest national lockdown. It comes as figures suggest schools could still be attended by up to 20 per cent of pupils. But children are now being supervised by nurses, similar to how some walk-in testing centres are run, rather than having a nurse carry out the tests themselves. The idea is that fewer medical experts or volunteers are needed allowing a larger number of people to be test more quickly. But multiple studies show lateral flow tests - when self-administered - could miss cases, due to the force and depth needed to collect a sample. It comes as calls to limit the number of children in … [Read more...] about Do you trust your child to do their OWN Covid tests? · March 3, 2021 ·

A FUN-loving teenager, who was a slinky size 6, has revealed how she gave birth to a surprise baby. Siobhan Buchanan, now 19, of Perth, Scotland, had no idea she was pregnant as she had no bump and would bleed monthly. She and her then boyfriend, Kieran Millar, now 21, also practised safe sex, using condoms. In March 2019, Siobhan was at work when she had excruciating back pains and the next day, she was rushed to hospital. There, doctors told her she was in labour, and just minutes later, Siobhan gave birth to baby Oscar, now 23 months old. Shocked Siobhan, says: “I’d been using condoms with my boyfriend, had a flat stomach and had periods every month. “I couldn’t believe I’d carried a baby for nine months without knowing. Thankfully, he was a healthy little boy.” In December 2018, Siobhan, now a stay-at-home mum, then 17, was a slim size 6. Boris Johnson is due to unveil his roadmap for lifting the current lockdown, with rapid mass testing set to be a key part of the prime minister's plan for easing COVID restrictions. Ministers have said lateral flow tests will be used to crack down on fresh coronavirus outbreaks once national restrictions are loosened. It has also been suggested the same tests will assist in the return of pupils to schools and could even allow venues such as nightclubs and theatres to reopen their doors. COVID-19: ‘Don’t you do it with the furry bit?’ – How one family coped with DIY home tests

· February 28, 2021 ·

The Braddoch family are taking rapid flow COVID tests for the first time. They're in the comfort of their own homes, just as millions of people may be when they become entitled to two tests each week from 1 March. The new measures apply to anyone in a household or support bubble with a child or young person who goes to college, primary or secondary school in England. Thirteen-year-old Zach Braddoch is nervous. He's heard horror stories from friends who have taken these before. "They said when they stick it up your nose you can feel it on your eye balls," he says. Advertisement Luckily for Zach, these tests are designed to be self-administered. His father James has already opened the packets and started examining their contents. A long swab, a vial of fluid and the test tray resembling a pregnancy test. But no amount of persuading will convince eight-year-old Seb to take it.
