Operation back to class: 57 million test kits are sent to schools in Boris’ bold first step out of lockdown

· March 6, 2021 ·

More than eight million pupils aged between four and 18 head back to the classroom from tomorrow as the UK takes its first and 'irreversible' steps out of lockdown . The move has the support of nine out of ten parents, who have been home schooling since January. Boris Johnson has hailed the return as heads and teachers are preparing for the epic challenge of repeatedly testing more than three million secondary school children over the first fortnight. Some 57 million Covid test packs have been sent to schools and colleges in a bid to ensure the safe return and break any chains of transmission. A report today by the Institute for Fiscal Studies has found 89 per cent of parents would send their child back tomorrow even if the return was optional. Fact check: The risk of catching coronavirus outdoors

· January 6, 2021 ·

How great is the risk of contracting coronavirus outdoors? The chances of becoming infected with the virus are far slimmer outdoors than indoors. This applies to the original coronavirus as well as to its mutants. This is due to aerosols, which are tiny particles floating in the atmosphere, that play a key role in the spread of the virus. Experts say aerosols pose a smaller risk outdoors. "This has to do with air circulation being far more pronounced outdoors," says Nico Mutters, who heads the Institute for Hygiene and Public Health at Bonn University Hospital. "The winds have a quick diluting effect." Birgit Wehner, an aerosols researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, says the tiny particles we exhale dry and dissipate far quicker outdoors. However, a paper by the Aerosols Association — signed by Wehner and others — states that infections still cannot be ruled out when individuals gather in large groups without keeping a sufficient distance. This means … [Read more...] about Fact check: The risk of catching coronavirus outdoors

Plan now, go later: Montenegro Bay offers Europe’s best scenery

· March 6, 2021 ·

AT the start of 2020 as operators upped offerings to Montenegro, the tiny nation on the Adriatic seemed set to be the next big holiday hotspot. Covid clearly put a pause on all that, but 2021 is looking good for travel to the black mountains and golden beaches of this Balkan nation. THE CLASSIC SIGHT Montenegro, which is not part of the EU, has so far operated a laidback stance on Covid restrictions making it a good bet for booking a summer holiday for later this year. Europe’s southernmost fjord, the Bay of Kotor offers some of the Dalmatian coast’s most dramatic scenery. In the few places where the mighty cliffs don’t plummet directly into the sea, well-preserved medieval towns squeeze between the steep hills and stunning waters. In the middle of the bay sits Our Lady Of The Rocks, a 15th-century island church. A short boat ride from Kotor town takes you to the island, where guided tours through the church and museum are less than £1pp. THE WOW MOMENT Take … [Read more...] about Plan now, go later: Montenegro Bay offers Europe’s best scenery

COVID-19: Greece invites Britons to start booking holidays as it targets 40 islands for vaccinations

· March 6, 2021 ·

Greece's tourism minister has said Britons hoping for a summer holiday in the country can start booking as it prioritises giving the COVID vaccine to the inhabitants of around 40 small islands. The islands, which each have a population of less than 1,000 people, include Halki near Rhodes, Kastellorizo off the Turkish coast, Meganisi in the Ionian Sea and Kythira in the Peloponnese peninsula, according to the Daily Telegraph. Larger destinations such as Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu will be targeted once Greece's tiniest islands have been vaccinated, the newspaper said. However, UK government has said the earliest date people from England can travel abroad for a holiday is 17 May - that is provided the four tests for easing lockdown are met. Follow live COVID-19 updates from the UK and around the world Advertisement Greek tourism minister Harry Theoharis told the Telegraph: "If you're going to send a medical team to an island with a small population, … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Greece invites Britons to start booking holidays as it targets 40 islands for vaccinations
