The EU's South Africa covid-variant hotspot Tyrol has gone into lockdown , with no one allowed to leave the Austrian region without a negative coronavirus test. Austria's leader announced the measure on Tuesday as authorities try to prevent the spread of a coronavirus variant first discovered in South Africa. Some 293 cases of the more contagious variant have been confirmed in Tyrol. More than 120 of those cases are currently active, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. Concentrated in the Schwaz district, east of Innsbruck, they represent he biggest known current outbreak of the variant in the European Union , authorities said. All arrivals to the UK face having to take three coronavirus tests amid rising fears about mutant strains, it was revealed today. The tightening is set to be confirmed as ministers said they were 'strengthening our approach' in response to the threat of variants from abroad.  Health Secretary Matt Hancock is due to give details of the new systems in the Commons this afternoon, with insiders suggesting there will be two main tracks at the border.  Arrivals from dozens of high-risk countries on the 'red list' will have to test negative 72 hours before travelling, and then be screened again twice during a 10-day stay in in an official 'quarantine hotel'. Meanwhile, all other travellers will also have to show a negative result before coming to the UK, and then face two more tests while isolating at home or in other private accommodation. British Airways passengers can now buy a discounted Covid-19 test kit to take abroad, which they can use ahead of their return to the UK. Under the current UK travel rules, anyone arriving in the UK will need to show proof of a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of departure - which leaves travellers having to find somewhere abroad to get a test. However, British Airways is offering discounted antigen kits from Qured for £33, which passengers can buy before they travel. Passengers can order the kits to their UK address, which are designed to be portable so passengers can take them abroad. They can then schedule a video call with one of Qured's professional health advisors for when it's time to administer the test, so that they can be guided through the process and check that it's done correctly. Pupils have been swabbing themselves as school nurses watch on despite proof rapid tests only work if they are administered properly.Students at Oasis Academy in Coulsdon, Surrey, were sent the kits on Monday and given instructions by nurses on how to carry out the tests themselves.Only vulnerable children or those whose parents are key workers are allowed to attend lessons in person during the latest national lockdown. ALL travellers entering the UK will have to take three coronavirus tests under new measures announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock. Here is everything you need to know about the new rules. What are the new coronavirus test rules? The new rules require an additional two coronavirus tests from all UK arrivals. These are in addition to a negative Covid test already needed up to 72 hours before arriving in the country. The measures now mean that all arrivals in the country have to have a test taken on day 2 and day 8 of their mandatory quarantine. This affects people quarantining at home and people quarantining at the new quarantine hotels.The Test and Release scheme which allows travellers to leave quarantine on day five with a negative coronavirus test, will remain in place - but this will mean a total of four Covid tests.
