Three trampers have been airlifted from Green Lake in Fiordland National Park because of snowy conditions in the area. A police spokesperson said it was alerted to an emergency beacon activation just east of Green Lake in Fiordland National Park about 4.30pm. Green Lake is about 6.8km from the Lake Monawai carpark, about an hour’s drive from Te Anau. A helicopter dispatched from Te Anau located three trampers just after 5pm, the spokesperson said. A Maritime New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre spokesperson said the three trampers had been on an overnight tramp near Green Lake when they realised because of snow conditions they would not be able to make it to the hut. They subsequently activated the emergency beacon, and were airlifted by Southern Lake Helicopters back to their vehicle just after 5pm, the spokesperson said. MetService issued a road snowfall warning on Milford Rd on Friday, forecasting possible snow showers above 800m in the morning and afternoon, … [Read more...] about Trampers airlifted from Fiordland National Park

National Kissing Day: People share their terrible first kiss stories
Your first kiss isn’t always the tender meeting of lips or cinematic snog you hope it will be. Mine was certainly traumatic. I was 11 or 12 and I kissed one of my female friends, who I had a huge crush on. Clearly I was a horrible kisser, because she then told what felt like the whole school that I was a lesbian (but she wasn’t) and I kissed like a washing machine and tasted like cheese. In my defence, kissing doesn’t come naturally to everyone on the first try (particularly if they’re trying to imitate the more passionate scenes in Titanic) and cheese sandwiches are delicious. I’m definitely not alone with my embarrassing first kiss story. In honour of National Kissing Day, we decided to ask people about their awful first kisses and we were not disappointed. Hannah, 26 Just a massive, slobbery, disgusting mess. Tongue everywhere, he was basically washing my face with it like an overexcited puppy and his breath was awful. He tasted like gravy from the roast … [Read more...] about National Kissing Day: People share their terrible first kiss stories

Ukraine war: Zelenskyy urges ‘terrorist state’ Russia’s expulsion from United Nations
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of becoming “a terrorist” state carrying out “daily terrorist acts” and urged Russia’s expulsion from the United Nations, in a virtual address to the UN Security Council on Tuesday. Zelenskyy urged the UN to establish an international tribunal to investigate “the actions of Russian occupiers on Ukrainian soil” and to hold the country accountable. “We need to act urgently to do everything to make Russia stop the killing spree,” Zelenskyy said, warning that otherwise Russia’s “terrorist activity” will spread to other European countries and Asia, singling out the Baltic states, Poland, Moldova and Kazakhstan. “What is punished at the level of specific criminals and criminal organisations must not go unpunished at the level of a state that has become a terrorist,” he said. “Daily terrorist acts. No days off. They work as terrorists every day.” In urging Russia's expulsion, Zelenskyy cited Article 6 of the UN Charter … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Zelenskyy urges ‘terrorist state’ Russia’s expulsion from United Nations
Man gored by bison at Yellowstone National Park, second visitor attacked in a month
A man from Colorado was injured after being gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park, park officials said Tuesday, marking the second such incident at the park in a month. The 34-year-old man was walking Monday with his family on a boardwalk near Giant Geyser at Old Faithful on Monday when "a bull bison charged the group," the park said. The family did not leave the area, and the bison continued to charge and gored the man. The man, who is from Colorado Springs, was transported by ambulance to a hospital and treated for an arm injury. Officials did not release information about his condition. The incident comes about a month after a bison gored a 25-year-old Ohio woman at the park. That bison was walking near a boardwalk at Black Sand Basin, just north of Old Faithful, when the woman approached , the park said. She got within 10 feet before the animal gored her and tossed her 10 feet in the air. The woman sustained a puncture wound and other injuries. Bison gores woman in Yellowstone National Park, tosses her 10 feet in the air
Yellowstone National Park, Wyo. — A bison gored a 25-year-old woman in Yellowstone National Park. The bison was walking near a boardwalk at Black Sand Basin, just north of Old Faithful, when the woman approached it on Monday, according to a park statement. She got within 10 feet before the animal gored her and tossed her 10 feet in the air. The woman, from Grove City, Ohio, sustained a puncture wound and other injuries. Park emergency medical providers responded and transported her via ambulance to a hospital in Idaho. Park officials say it's the first reported bison goring this year. The park statement noted that bison are unpredictable, have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal and can run three times faster than humans. Park regulations require visitors to remain more than 25 yards away from bison. The park statement said two other people were also within 25 yards of the same bison. The incident was under investigation. No additional … [Read more...] about Bison gores woman in Yellowstone National Park, tosses her 10 feet in the air
