Mexican journalists began nationwide protests Tuesday following the killings of three journalists in the space of two weeks. Demonstrators are demanding authorities do more to protect journalists despite a government program meant to do just that. Photographers placed their cameras on the ground outside Mexico City's National Palace, while candles were lit in tribute to those who had lost their lives. Protests were also held in the states of Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, Durango and Nayarit. Reporters held up placards reading "Not one more journalist killed,'' and "the truth can't be killed.'' Boris Johnson calls Brexit ‘an astonishing moment of hope’
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made a Brexit Day speech hailing the UK’s departure from the European Union as “astonishing moment of hope” that is “not an end but a beginning.” In a message recorded by government officials and emailed to media in the final hours before Brexit, he described it as “potentially a moment of real national renewal and change.” “This is the moment when the dawn breaks and the curtain goes up on a new act in our great national drama,” he said. He said that, “for all its strengths and for all its admirable qualities, the EU has evolved over 50 years in a direction that no longer suits this country,” adding: “That is a judgment that you, the people, have now confirmed at the polls. Not once, but twice.” The tone and message were markedly different from those of French President Emmanuel Macron, who offered words of reassurance for British citizens living in France and gave a rallying message for the European Union. “We have … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson calls Brexit ‘an astonishing moment of hope’

Belarus: Women as the drivers of protest
One year ago, on August 9, 2020, Alexander Lukashenko declared himself the winner of Belarus' presidential elections. Massive nationwide protests ensued, which were followed by a seemingly unending wave of arrests, torture and intimidation of the participants. "I had the feeling that they would soon come for me as well," says Anna Koval, who, along with other helpers, collected food, toiletries and clothing for people in detention. "We joke among ourselves that we suffer from bus phobia — a specifically Belarusian anxiety disorder," she says. "We mean the small buses carrying unknown people who can stop you on the street at any time and force you into the vehicles. They don't tell you who they are or why they are taking you away. Even people who aren't at all politically active can have it happen to them." The personal story of Anna Koval, who felt compelled to leave her native country four months ago, and that of many other women in Belarus is told by the author Alice Bota in … [Read more...] about Belarus: Women as the drivers of protest
How you treat cleaners and other service staff says everything about you
It’s widely accepted (and discussed, at least amongst my friendship group) that if you are thinking of dating someone, pay attention to how they treat those who serve them: cleaners, waiters, porters, receptionists, delivery drivers. It tells you a lot about what kind of person they are. This theory even has a name (and a Wikipedia page ): the Waiter Rule. A word, then, to those in Downing Street . We now know, thanks to Sue Gray ’s damning report , that a “culture of disrespect” was allowed to proliferate inside No 10 , far beyond what we have already heard ( and seen ) of the partygoing during lockdown; the booze and the fighting and being sick . We have discovered a different and peculiar unpleasantness – reports from those who work hardest and matter most, who probably have the longest hours and the most arduous tasks of all of Downing Street: its cleaners and security guards. We have read abhorrent acounts of how one cleaner had to scrub red wine … [Read more...] about How you treat cleaners and other service staff says everything about you

Ukraine: India ‘feeling the heat’ over neutrality
Soutik Biswas Published 25 March Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war On Monday, US President Joe Biden told a meeting of business leaders in Washington that among the so-called Quad group of nations, India was being "somewhat shaky" in its response to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The US, Japan and Australia - the three other members of this coalition formed to counter China's influence - have been "extremely strong in terms of dealing with Putin's aggression", he said. India, however, has doggedly pursued a non-aligned foreign policy since independence, where, according to the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, "we will stay away from the big blocs…to be friendly to all countries…not join any alliance." But will the war in Ukraine now put India's fabled neutrality under strain? 'Uncharted territory' … [Read more...] about Ukraine: India ‘feeling the heat’ over neutrality
