Parents are taking out almost £2m in loans each year to fund their children’s spending habits, the latest research has found, with parents supporting their children until the age of 29. Turning 18 may have once symbolised the beginning of adulthood, but the journey to financial independence is lengthier and more costly than parents may have ever bargained for. A study by Sainsbury’s Bank reveals that while a quarter of UK parents hope they won’t have to fund their offspring much past their early 20s, fathers are likely to cut the purse strings on their children up to three years earlier than mothers. Paying for everything from significant birthdays to gap year travel plans, half of those who took out a loan to support their children last year put the money towards a wedding, with the average value standing at more than £12,000. Other popular reasons were education, including university fees, costs and trip expenses, with an average value of £13,000; loans for children’s … [Read more...] about Parents should expect to pay their kids’ bills for 30 years

Preakness set to run in expected near-record heat as sweltering temps hit East Coast
When the nine horses running the Preakness Stakes line up Saturday evening at Pimlico Race Course, they'll do so in near-record heat: nearly 91 degrees, according to forecasts. CBS Baltimore projects an afternoon high of 95 degrees, which will drop to about 91 by the Preakness' 7:01 p.m. post time. The record — 96 degrees — was set back in 1934. What fans need to know about the 2022 Preakness Stakes The race is generally known as the middle jewel in the Triple Crown, sandwiched between the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. There's no chance of a Triple Crown winner in 2022, as owner Richard Dawson and trainer Eric Reed have decided not to enter longshot Derby winner Rich Strike in Saturday's race. It's the first time since 1985 a healthy Kentucky Derby winner wasn't entered in the Preakness, according to CBS Sports . The favorite is Derby runner-up Epicenter, who was at 6-5 odds, followed by Early Voting at 7-2 and Secret Oath with 9-2 odds. The longshot in … [Read more...] about Preakness set to run in expected near-record heat as sweltering temps hit East Coast
Arsenal told to expect exits and striker transfer blow without Champions League
Newcastle could actually finish above Arsenal next season based on what I saw the other night - I'm not saying they will, but I was flabbergasted by what I saw in that game. And I guarantee you there will be players at Arsenal now saying: "I want to leave if we don't get Champions League football." That's what sickens me the most. But they had their chance to qualify and they melted! It was bad enough they got thrashed by Tottenham. But then to lose to Newcastle.. Every single player was a four out of ten in that game. I've never seen that before. Usually you have a couple who do the business. But every single player just didn't turn up. I was actually watching it wondering who finishes higher next season, Arsenal or Newcastle? The gulf was unreal. Only one team had nothing to play for in that game. But if you didn't know, you'd think it was Arsenal, because they just didn't turn up. I could not believe what I was watching. They're just a young team. Inexperienced. One … [Read more...] about Arsenal told to expect exits and striker transfer blow without Champions League

We were once pro-Russian … but now we’ve switched sides to defend Ukraine against Vladimir Putin
The tuba played the Last Post. And the rifles fired over him as they lowered him down. Far away, the artillery fired its own, unrelenting salute. Sergeant Igor Levistsky was 33 when he was killed by a Russian rocket last week. His funeral in his home town of Slavyansk was attended by large numbers of locals and fellow soldiers. “He was a loving father. A wonderful man,” his father, Alexander, said after the rifles had fallen silent and the mourners trailed away. Slavyansk lies on an important rail and road junction in the northern Donetsk region, and is one of the key objectives of Russia’s Donbas offensive . The frontline is currently little more than 20 miles away and the dull, distant thud of howitzer and rocket duels are clearly audible from the town centre. But this town has symbolic, as well as strategic significance. Eight years ago, on another spring day, The Telegraph watched another guard of honour fired over the graves of young men from this town. Those men … [Read more...] about We were once pro-Russian … but now we’ve switched sides to defend Ukraine against Vladimir Putin
Obstetrician who left baby with severe brain damage went to Ghana to set up lookalike NHS clinic
An “arrogant” doctor left a baby with catastrophic brain damage then went to Ghana to set up a lookalike clinic under the same name as his former NHS hospital. Dr Ignatius Adams, who was described as “yelling and swearing” during delivery, tugged the child so violently that he almost dragged the mother onto the floor. It later emerged that the registrar obstetrician was at that time under investigation for writing fraudulent prescriptions for family members. The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, where he worked, has since admitted massive failings in its care and paid substantial damages to the family, who must remain anonymous for legal reasons. However, the family is demanding to know why Dr Adams was allowed to work at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, on the fateful evening in April 2016. Mother had three heart attacks His actions caused the mother to suffer three heart attacks on the operating table because she had lost so much blood . The child is … [Read more...] about Obstetrician who left baby with severe brain damage went to Ghana to set up lookalike NHS clinic
Midwifery students being taught how to help men give birth
Midwifery students are being taught how to help men give birth in a textbook that experts have warned is rife with anatomical fiction. Edinburgh Napier University told training midwives that they may be caring for a “birthing person” who has male genitalia and a prostate gland, in a bid to support transgender people . A module guide on how to provide safe care in childbirth told students: “It is important to note that while most times the birthing person will have female genitalia, you may be caring for a pregnant or birthing person who is transitioning from male to female and may still have external male genitalia. “You need to be familiar with the catheterisation procedure for both female and male anatomy. For this reason, where appropriate, this book refers to the birthing person.” The guide, obtained by The Telegraph, explained the “male anatomy catheterisation” procedure during birth, commonly used during caesarean section to drain excess fluids, along with diagrams on … [Read more...] about Midwifery students being taught how to help men give birth
Putin puts ‘brutal’ GRU spy unit behind Skripal poisoning in charge of intel
The "brutal" Russian military spy unit that tried to assassinate Sergei Skripal in Salisbury in 2018 has been handed command of Russia's intelligence operations in Ukraine. The GRU is taking over from the FSB , the intelligence service Vladimir Putin has blamed for failings that contributed to his army's humiliating retreat from Kyiv . It came as US officials suggested Russian officers in Ukraine were refusing to obey their superiors. A senior US defence official said officers as high as battalion commanders were not obeying orders. Other officers in Donbas were not functioning with the "alacrity" that might be expected, the US official said. Analysts have said that, with US help, Ukraine has had access to far better intelligence than Russia. Attacks against the West Several Russian generals have been killed in the war and other high-value targets, such as the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet , have been destroyed. The GRU's appointment in Ukraine should … [Read more...] about Putin puts ‘brutal’ GRU spy unit behind Skripal poisoning in charge of intel
Pugs are not ‘typical dogs’ because of their ‘lifetime of suffering’, says study
Pugs can no longer be considered a “typical dog” because extreme breeding has given them a long list of severe health issues . The desire for extreme, baby-like dogs with bulging eyes , folds of skin and flat faces has led to long-lasting and life-shortening health problems , which mean the animal is subjected to a “lifetime of suffering”. Dr Dan O’Neill, senior lecturer in companion animal epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, told The Telegraph that pugs lacked the “basic functions” expected of a canine. “We have dogs that are typical, like Labradors, where they have a long nose and a tail and are not that dissimilar to a wild dog,’’ he said. “Obviously, they have a different temperament but physically they just look like a wolf or a coyote or a dingo or a fox. “We’ve drafted a list of core body functions that any dog should expect to be able to do when it’s born and when it’s alive and these are very basic. “For example, they should be able to blink. It … [Read more...] about Pugs are not ‘typical dogs’ because of their ‘lifetime of suffering’, says study
