The National Science Foundation hosted a morning press conference featuring scientists from around the world to release the picture, albeit fuzzy, of a black hole. The image was captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, an international collaboration created to show a black hole. Here's everything you need to know about black holes. What is a black hole? First ever image of black hole released after telescope in Spain called into action
SPANISH astronomers have helped create the first ever image of a black hole, which is described by scientists as ‘a monster’.Measuring 40 billion km across, the cosmic phenomenon was pictured by scientists manning a telescope in Andalucia, as well as seven other sites.The black hole is three million times the size of the Earth and is 500 million trillion km away.The image of the black hole does not show the hole itself, but the gases surrounding it.Findings of the discovery were published in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Researchers unveiled the first image of a black hole silhouette on Wednesday, giving scientists a chance to test Einstein's theory of general relativity and Brussels room to pull out of the orbit of the hulking U.S. space industry. The image was of a halo of matter circling a black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, 55 million light years away. The black hole itself, where there is such a powerful gravitational force that even light cannot escape and the laws of physics break down, cannot be seen directly. The Event Horizon Telescope has been carrying out an international mission to photograph a black hole and its first results will be presented this afternoon. Current theories suggest that black holes are invisible but have a gravitational pull so strong that they suck in light, which leaves the area around them distinguishable and a black circle shaped void in the middle. It is widely thought that every galaxy has a supermassive black hole at its centre, including the Milky Way. The cosmic material which is in close proximity to the edge of a black hole is thought to spin so fast that it actually emits radiation.
