Nikola Kalinic's first goal of 2018 cancelled out a Matteo Politano strike, but a point apiece does precious little for Milan or Sassuolo. The Rossoneri could've closed the gap on the top four, or at least consolidated their Europa League position, but were instead held to another stalemate. Politano had opened the scoring at San Siro when springing the offside trap on a Luca Mazzitelli headed assist over the top. Kalinic first wasted a free header, then got the equaliser, turning Lemos to smash in off the underside of the crossbar. There were chances to win it in stoppages, but Andrea Consigli confirmed his Man of the Match performance with a fingertip save on Jack Bonaventura at the 95th minute. To make matters worse, Alessio Romagnoli went off injured and Leonardo Bonucci will be suspended against Napoli. The Flying Donkeys resisted until Fabio Depaoli’s foul on Dries Mertens in the 51st minute conceded a penalty. However, the Belgian forward fired against Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino. Substitute Mariusz Stepinski gave Chievo a shock lead in the 73rd minute by driving home a fantastic effort from an Emmanuele Giaccherini pass, yet Napoli replacement Arkadiusz Milik would go on to level. One minute from time, the Pole notched his first … [Read more...] about Amadou Diawara nets late Napoli winner to keep Serie A title hopes alive
Last-gasp goals from Arkadiusz Milik and Amadou Diawara kept Napoli's Serie A title ambitions alive as a dramatic 2-1 win over Chievo on Sunday maintained the pressure on reigning champions Juventus. Maurizio Sarri's title-chasers looked destined to remain seven points behind Juventus as they trailed until the 89th minute at their San Paolo stadium. Polish striker Mariusz Stepinski's goal on 73 minutes had put the relegation battlers from Verona ahead, with Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino making a string of saves including from a Dries Mertens penalty. But Milik headed in the equaliser with one minute of normal time to go with Guinean midfielder Diawara grabbing the winner deep into injury time. "We won a game that we deserved to win," said Sarri. "It had seemed cursed, as we had 31 shots on goal, missed a penalty, hit the woodwork. It was one of those classic games where the team does everything right and the ball won't go in. "But they kept pushing and the logical conclusion was … [Read more...] about Last-gasp Napoli keep title ambitions alive

Despite being largely underwhelming for much of the contest, substitute Juan Cuadrado and Sami Khedira both struck late on for a Juve side seeking a seventh straight domestic title. Second-placed Napoli could only draw at Sassuolo earlier in the day, though it had looked like the Bianconeri would drop points too after former Juve defender Leonardo Bonucci cancelled out Paulo Dybala’s opener for Milan. Napoli’s surprising slip up meant Juventus kicked off still at the top of the table and with an opportunity to open up an even bigger lead. They looked in the mood to do so early on as Gonzalo Higuain tested Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from range. … [Read more...] about Juventus extend lead over Napoli at Serie A summit
