Carlo Ancelotti, the Napoli manager, expects Thursday night’s Europa League quarter-final to be a “totally different story” to the 10-2 humiliation he inflicted upon Arsenal in Arsene Wenger’s last ever Champions League game. Ancelotti returns to the Emirates on Thursday for the first time since his Bayern Munich side scored five times in each leg of their round-of-16 tie against Arsenal in 2017. Arsenal’s defeat to Ancelotti’s side was the worst suffered by an English team in the Champions League, and was the last match that the Premier League side played in Europe’s premier competition. Seven Arsenal players who featured in the second leg of that tie could play against Napoli on Thursday night, but Ancelotti insists that Arsenal are a different proposition under Unai Emery. “If I say I forgot [this match] it is not true,” said Ancelotti. “I did not forget but each game is a different story, imagine every season different … [Read more...] about Arsenal now a ‘totally different story’ from team beaten 10-2 by Bayern, insists Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti
Santiago Solari's dismissal as Real Madrid boss has added another name to the list of coaches Florentino Perez has been through. A number have come and gone at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and we have taken a look at where they are now. When Florentino won the elections Del Bosque was already in charge at Real Madrid and Los Blancos had won a Champions League and two LaLiga titles, though he was interestingly removed from his position after a league win. Del Bosque is now away from coaching after previously taking Spain to victory in the World Cup in South Africa. Del Bosque's replacement was the 'unknown' Manchester United coach Queiroz and he lasted less than a year on the Madrid bench before taking over Portugal without any real success. He had been Iran boss since 2011 but took over Colombia in February. The setback of Queiroz prompted Camacho's arrival but just a handful of games into the 2004/05 season he was relieved of his duties. After leaving Madrid he took over Benfica … [Read more...] about Zidane returns to Real Madrid but what happened to Florentino Perez’s other coaches?
Seedorf: Real Madrid are always special in the Champions League Not since a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Lyon in the 2009/10 Champions League season have Real Madrid been knocked out at the last 16 stage. The arrival of Jose Mourinho that summer saw them progress past the first knockout hurdle once again and they've gone on to reach at least the semi-finals eight seasons in a row, winning the whole thing four times. Of their previous eight last 16 ties, Los Blancos have suffered just one defeat, while winning 12 of their matches and drawing three. That one defeat came against Schalke in 2014/15, but their progress was still secured thanks to a 2-0 win in the first leg in Germany. Isco and Solari, a never-ending case Solari asked if Isco's tweet annoyed him: Well... There is no rush to sort the Isco situation, both from the player's perspective and that of Real Madrid, as the player has been praised for his attitude in training and his close relationship with his teammates, which has been better than in times of euphoria. Football is a funny game and a lot could change before the end of the season, but for the time being there has not been any definitive decisions made with regard to Isco, nor that of the coach, or with possible signings, such as Eden Hazard. That is not to say that they do not understand Isco's current predicament under Santiago Solari, but Madrid would prefer to wait. There has been talk that Manchester City and Napoli could put together bids ranging from 100 to 150 million euros for the 26-year-old, yet no one at Madrid has thus far put a price on the playmaker's head, though that time will come. Years ago, when Zinedine Zidane asked for … [Read more...] about The delayed tension between Isco and Real Madrid
