Four years after The Dark World, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is back for a third, riotous standalone Marvel adventure. Set entirely in Thor’s mystical world of the nine realms, the god of thunder has to prevent Ragnarok, the downfall of Asgard. Except his evil sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) is suddenly back in town and he’s been cast out (again) to a junkyard planet a million miles away, where he has to fight his way out in order to save his people. Gone is director Alan Taylor and in comes Taika Waititi, bringing with him a flair as cool as his fashion sense. Thor has a trendy new haircut, and distant planet Sakaar, run by the ruthless Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum, relishing every minute) is not so much an ancient world steeped in legend but a glam rock shag pad – quite literally in the case of one spaceship. Everything is fairground-coloured and chunky like a 90s Saturday morning cartoon. Which pretty much sums up the humour this time around too. It’s refreshingly odd, … [Read more...] about Thor: Ragnarok review: God of thunder lightens up in Marvel’s funniest film yet

Thor: Love And Thunder review – An obscenely entertaining rainbow highway straight to blockbuster heaven
Top Gun Maverick, then Elvis and now Thor: Love And Thunder: it’s got to be the best run of July blockbusters in living memory. We’ll be lucky to glimpse the sunshine. In the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor (or rather, his movies) has carved out a niche as ‘the funny one’. That’s down to the utterly hilarious Thor: Ragnarok (2017), which, under the unique direction of Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) played out like a super-hero sized send-up of itself. Thankfully Waititi is back and significantly more in control of his mega-bucks Hollywood behemoth this time round. A quick flashback reminds us of where Chris Hemsworth’s hero, the Norse god, Thor is now at. After basically everyone close to him has died (multiple times in the case of his brother, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki), Waititi’s narrator tells us how a lonely Thor has shaken off his ‘dad bod’ for an ever more awesome ‘god bod’, but he’s still a ‘sad bod’ inside. Thor still holds a candle for his one true … [Read more...] about Thor: Love And Thunder review – An obscenely entertaining rainbow highway straight to blockbuster heaven
What your relationship status says about your HEALTH – and your risk of dying from cancer
IF you're single, you might look at people in relationships longingly. Alternatively you might rejoice in evenings to yourself and not having to spend time with annoying in-laws. Auberon Waugh
Auberon Waugh's death at the age of 61 is more sad than surprising. His immediate heredity wasn't promising - his father died at 62, his mother at 57 - and he suffered from ill-health all his life, partly resulting from severe wounds sustained during National Service at the age of 18. That may, in part, have accounted for the acidic personality which made him the most verbally brutal journalist of his age. Everyone who met him remarked on the contrast between his ferocity in print and his personal geniality, but this was hard to explain to those who didn't know him, especially if they had been on the rough end of his pen. Apart from health, his background shaped his career in one other respect. He spent much of his life trying to escape from the shadow of his father, the greatest English novelist of his age. This provided an obvious weapon for Auberon's enemies. Philip Larkin joked about "my projected series, Talentless Sons of Famous Fathers - Waugh, Amis, Fuller...", and for … [Read more...] about Auberon Waugh

Free speech row over new hate crime bill in Scotland
Published 25 July 2020 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A public consultation has closed on changes to Scotland's hate crime laws, which opponents say could have a damaging effect on free speech. Ministers argue the bill offers great protection for victims at a time when the number of cases is on the rise. Scottish Labour's James Kelly said he had 'serious reservations', especially over the offence of stirring up hatred. But Scotland's justice secretary said people's freedom of expression was not under attack. As you are reading this news story on the BBC news website I am going to hazard a guess that you probably believe that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. And that you think without the right to free speech many other freedoms may be threatened? You would probably also agree that it is wrong actively attempt to stir up hatred against … [Read more...] about Free speech row over new hate crime bill in Scotland

Keira Walsh: ‘The mentality now is all about the team winning, rather than individuals’
Sitting down for a chat in the peaceful surrounding of FC Basel's sun-soaked training ground, England midfielder Keira Walsh's calm demeanour epitomises the tranquility of the rolling, green hills in the distance behind her as well as the atmosphere in the whole Lionesses' squad. And it's because one word appropriately sums up the feeling in the group: relaxed. Not the sort of relaxation that resembles a holiday, nor complacency - on the contrary, the intense focus to training is clear to see too - but the kind that oozes from a group that evidently know that, whatever challenges might come their way in the upcoming Euros, their head coach has given them the confidence and the tools to find on-pitch solutions. This has been evident in England's three victories in June's warm-up games - all of which were still level at half-time - as their strength in depth helped them to eventually coast to 3-0 , 5-1 and 4-0 victories. Yet arguably the pressure on this squad to deliver has … [Read more...] about Keira Walsh: ‘The mentality now is all about the team winning, rather than individuals’
