The final Premier League table made for grim reading. Manchester United may have recorded their highest Premier League finish since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 but Manchester City walked the league. The final numbers showed they finished 19 points ahead of United in second and naturally come the end of the season all the talk turned to how that gap will be closed down next season. City are unlikely to enjoy such a runaway season in the new campaign - teams will have started to wise up on how best to play against them and they showed last season it is possible to beat them. But aside from United's rivals, Mourinho's side needs to improve. One option is to keep throwing money at it. Swansea City's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford saw them drop to 15th in the table as the Premier League relegation battle really hots up. Early goals from Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were enough to seal victory for Jose Mourinho's side. But there was good, and bad, news for Carlos Carvalhal and his team as results filtered through from key fixtures being played elsewhere. Relegation rivals Newcastle and West Ham each climbed the table with victories... but only as a result of beating Huddersfield and Southampton respectively, two other clubs in danger of the drop. Crystal Palace had earlier lost a 1-0 lead to be beaten by Liverpool at Selhurst Park, while Brighton are still firmly in the mix themselves after losing 2-0 at home to Leicester.
