A memorial will be held Saturday in Youngsville to remember two Black men who were murdered in the years after the Civil War. The ceremony will include the collection of soil samples, which will be jarred and labeled with the names of the victims, to display at local memorials and at the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Saturday's ceremony will honor Ovide Belizaire, who was murdered in his Youngsville-area home in 1895 by a White mob, and an unidentified man who suffered death by lynching in 1878 in the neighborhood of Royville — today known as Youngsville. Belizaire, a Black man in his 40s, died on July 19, 1895, from a gunshot wound after a mob entered his Youngsville home. Newspaper reports accused Belizaire of firing on the mob upon answering the door, but five of his family members testified at the coroner’s inquest that he had invited the mob in to look around. The mob was allegedly looking for a thief. Family members reported Belizaire was sitting on his bed when … [Read more...] about Two Black men murdered in Youngsville after Civil War to be honored with soil memorial

Disiformation outlets are back, prompting no response from state
After Russia invaded Ukraine, the Slovak parliament passed a law to shut down media spreading disinformation. Then, in just a few days, the National Security Authority (NBÚ) blocked the Hlavné správy and Armádny magazín websites. A week later, Hlavný denník and Infovojna followed suit. Skryť Remove ad Article continues after video advertisement Skryť Remove ad Article continues after video advertisement Their blocking was supposed to last until the end of June, but the parliament has since approved that it can be extended until the end of September. However, the NBÚ did not act this time. More than a month has passed since the websites have become available again and will most likely remain so. Actually, the NBÚ could find reasons for their blocking again. The Sme daily analysed whether the content of these websites changed in any way after unblocking, focusing on how they report on the war in Ukraine, as it was the … [Read more...] about Disiformation outlets are back, prompting no response from state
Golden State Killer will die behind bars for murdering 13 and raping dozens more
The Golden State Killer has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a decade-long spree of rape and murder which terrorised much of California in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Joseph James DeAngelo, 74, pleaded guilty in June to 13 murders and 13 rape-related charges under a plea deal that avoided a possible death sentence. The former cop also publicly admitted dozens more sexual assaults for which the statute of limitations had expired. Prosecutors called the scale of the violence ‘simply staggering’, encompassing 87 victims at 53 crime scenes spanning 11 counties. There were so many victims that the sentencing hearing had to be moved to a university ballroom so that relatives and survivors could attend and tell the judge how their lives had been ruined by the predator. DeAngelo sat silently through three days of heart-rending hearings, expressionless in a wheelchair that prosecutors contended is a prop to hide his still vigorous health. … [Read more...] about Golden State Killer will die behind bars for murdering 13 and raping dozens more
Islamic State conflict: Two Britons killed in RAF Syria strike
Published 7 September 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Two British Islamic State jihadists who died in Syria were killed by an RAF drone strike, David Cameron has said. Cardiff-born Reyaad Khan, 21, and Ruhul Amin, from Aberdeen, died last month in Raqqa, alongside another fighter, in the first targeted UK drone attack on a British citizen, Mr Cameron told MPs. Khan - the target - had been plotting "barbaric" attacks on UK soil, he said. The "act of self defence" was lawful, despite MPs previously ruling out UK military action in Syria, the PM said. Khan was killed in a precision strike on 21 August by a remotely piloted aircraft, "after meticulous planning", while he was travelling in a vehicle. Another British national, Junaid Hussain, 21 and from Birmingham, was killed in a separate air strike by US forces in Raqqa on 24 August. Sir Nick Clegg returns to London in latest Meta move
Sir Nick Clegg is to join a string of senior Facebook executives moving to London after four years in Silicon Valley, despite predicting that an “economically insecure” Britain would hemorrhage tech businesses in the wake of Brexit. The former Liberal Democrat deputy prime minister, 55, who is president of global affairs at Facebook's parent company Meta, is to divide his time between homes in London and California after his return to Britain. Sir Nick – who left the UK to work for Facebook's billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg after losing his seat as an MP – has made no secret of his longing to leave California, saying last year that his "heart belongs massively 5,000 miles away". However, the decision is nonetheless likely to raise eyebrows given his history of outspoken warnings about the damage that Brexit would do to UK plc – particularly in the industry in which he is now employed. In a 2017 interview, he said: "Pretty much everyone I speak to in the tech sector … [Read more...] about Sir Nick Clegg returns to London in latest Meta move
California is no Garden of Eden. It is now a woke basketcase whose rich and poor are fleeing alike
That Nick Clegg has become the latest Facebook executive to announce he’s fleeing Silicon Valley for Blighty , where he will spend half his time, says a lot about California. Britain is on the brink of a deep and protracted recession, with inflation set to rise to 13 per cent. Formerly thriving people will struggle to feed their families, heat their houses or go anywhere, since the railways are riddled with massive strikes and airports are chaos. We are lazy: even now, there is an acute labour shortage as people prefer not to work. And we are angry: GP surgeries, call centre staff and shopworkers have all reported a surge in abusive behaviour. Even so, basketcase Britain seems to be preferable to California. It’s not just Clegg: Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, owned by Facebook parent group Meta, and the firm’s chief marketing officer Alex Schultz, have also chosen to relocate to Britain. Clegg, who six months ago was promoted to head of global affairs at Meta, in charge of … [Read more...] about California is no Garden of Eden. Defence experts warn of ‘disaster’ for Britain after Donald Trump suggests undoing ‘out of control’ F-35 fighter jet project
British defence experts expressed alarm yesterday after Donald Trump suggested he might undo a multi-billion dollar stealth fighter project that is to form a core part of the United Kingdom's defensive capabilities. The president-elect took a casual shot at the F-35 programme for the world's most advanced fighter jet tweeting on Monday that the cost was "out of control". "Billions of dollars can and will be saved on military (and other) purchases after January 20th," he wrote, indicating a change in strategy after his inauguration. Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 6, 2016 But defence experts told this newspaper there would be disastrous consequences for Britain if Mr Trump were to put the plan on the scrap heap at this late stage. "If the US were to cancel the programme in its entirety tomorrow, the UK would … [Read more...] about Defence experts warn of ‘disaster’ for Britain after Donald Trump suggests undoing ‘out of control’ F-35 fighter jet project
Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
"Everything that's happened has been unexpected," Josh Groban says of his career. As a teenager, he studied acting, but that high lyric baritone could not be denied: By 2007, Groban was the No. 1 pop artist in the U.S., thanks in part to his 2003 hit "You Raise Me Up." In 2015, he was offered a starring role in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 , an electro-pop adaptation of War and Peace. That earned him a Tony nomination. Now, a few TV cameos ( The Office, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ) over the years have evolved into his own show, Netflix's The Good Cop, from Monk creator Andy Breckman. Groban plays Tony "TJ" Caruso, a by-the-book New York City police officer; Tony Danza co-stars as his dad, a disgraced ex-cop. The 10-episode series debuts September 21, which also happens to be the release date for Groban's eighth studio album, Bridges . "The timing was perfect," he says of Good Cop 's four-month shoot. "It fit right between finishing the album … [Read more...] about Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
Pro-death penalty legislators demand hearing on Richard Glossip’s execution
More than 60 Oklahoma lawmakers—many of them Republicans who support the death penalty—are calling for a new evidentiary hearing in the case of Richard Glossip ahead of his upcoming execution. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals set a September 22 execution date for Glossip , 59, after a federal judge rejected a challenge to the state's lethal injection protocol. But a group of 61 Oklahoma legislators—44 Republicans and 17 Democrats—have urged Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor to join their request for a new hearing, citing an independent investigation by a Texas law firm that raised concerns about Glossip's guilt and conviction. "The report concluded that no reasonable juror who heard all the evidence would find Mr. Glossip guilty," the legislators wrote in a letter to O'Connor last week. "As elected officials representing the citizens of this great state, we believe it is vitally important to conduct a serious review of this case so that the truth might be … [Read more...] about Pro-death penalty legislators demand hearing on Richard Glossip’s execution
