Rishi Sunak urged to save Britain’s pubs as figures show one closes every hour

· March 2, 2021 ·

With thousands of pubs closed for good and many more on the brink due to the pandemic the industry faces a bleak future unless Rishi Sunak steps in with a rescue plan, landlords warn. And the Daily Mirror is demanding the Chancellor uses today's Budget to deliver a lifeline to the nation’s much-loved locals. Mr Sunak is expected to announce a range of measures he claims will help boozers - including extending VAT cuts until the summer. But landlords warn they do not go far enough and will not allow pubs to build up profits lost after months of closures, putting jobs and livelihoods at risk. It comes as a report found nearly 12,000 licenced premises have shut for ever since December 2019. Mr Sunak recently boasted: “It’s because I care about that industry and the people who work in it that I want to try to do what I can for those jobs. They should feel reassured they remain uppermost in my mind.” But landlords now want him to turn those words into action. What is your … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak urged to save Britain’s pubs as figures show one closes every hour

The gated home comes with a carriage driveway with parking for up to ten cars, a gym, an infra-red sauna, and two whole floors for entertaining. The five-storey property, which features landscaped grounds, also boasts underfloor heating and even a lift for guests. Israel’s museum of German-Jewish heritage facing closure

· January 4, 2021 ·

The Tefen Industrial Park is located in northern Israel, a half-day trip from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem . The last part of the journey is a winding drive up a narrow mountain road. Yet, every year, hundreds of people, including visitors from Germany, have made the journey to visit the German-Speaking Jewry Heritage Museum, also known as the Jeckes Museum. Exhibits include books by the German philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, the poet Heinrich Heine and the Czech writer Franz Kafka, as well as medals that German Jews had received as honors in World War I. The museum also features a corrugated iron hut inhabited at one point by the Schatzmann family, who came to Israel from Berlin in the 1930s, finding refuge in the coastal town of Nahariya. They went from living a comfortable middle-class existence to inhabiting emergency accommodation without a toilet and only a tiny shower. The heat would have also have taken its toll on the family. "There was, of course, no air conditioning as we … [Read more...] about Israel’s museum of German-Jewish heritage facing closure

Anti-vaccination books are being sold on Amazon and the websites of Waterstones and Foyles - amid calls for warnings on items to combat the spread of misinformation. Top-selling books on Amazon include Anyone Who Tells You Vaccines Are Safe And Effective Is Lying, and Vaccine-nation: Poisoning The Population, One Shot At A Time. The number of customer reviews and ratings on books like these show there has been a big increase in purchases since the pandemic began.
