Liz Truss has insisted that the UK "will not shy away" from taking action on the Northern Ireland Protocol. The Foreign Secretary last night told Brussels its proposed solutions would make the situation worse after EU leaders threatened a trade war . She is preparing to announce that the UK will unilaterally change parts of the protocol – which defines post-Brexit trading terms between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland – as early as next week. Ministers are expected to point to the impasse over power-sharing in Northern Ireland in the wake of last week's elections as proof that the protocol is unsustainable. There were warnings from the Continent about potential economic consequences if the UK reneges on promises it made in the 2019 Brexit withdrawal agreement. But, as political editor Ben Riley-Smith reports, Ms Truss issued a retort . Meanwhile, Boris Johnson used yesterday's Queen's Speech to say that helping families with the cost of living crunch and … [Read more...] about Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat

Friday morning news briefing: Mass cull of Whitehall jobs
Civil service union leaders are on a direct collision course with ministers. As Whitehall opened a new front in their homeworking battle by seeking the right to work from abroad, Boris Johnson unveiled plans to cut 91,000 civil service jobs . The Prime Minister said the savings made from cutting "swollen" departments would be ploughed into helping people with the cost of living crisis – hinting it may be used to fund future tax cuts. At a Cabinet away day in Stoke-on-Trent, he gave each member of his top team one month to come up with plans for slimming down their own department as part of a drive to cut the overall number of officials by a fifth. Gordon Rayner and Nick Gutteridge explain how the bosses of Whitehall departments will insist that staff are allowed to work overseas "for personal reasons" rather than having to take annual leave. A series of motions passed by the FDA union's conference amounted to a manifesto for home working, in direct contradiction of … [Read more...] about Friday morning news briefing: Mass cull of Whitehall jobs

Germany saw more politically motivated crimes in 2021
The number of politically motivated crimes reported in Germany rose 23% last year compared to the year before, Germany's top security official said Tuesday. The increase included a sharp rise in crimes that could not be assigned to the traditional categories of crimes motivated by right-wing or left-wing ideology, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. A significant proportion of these “more diverse and diffuse” offenses were committed in connection with coronavirus restrictions and Germany's 2021 federal election, Faeser told reporters in Berlin . Overall, Germany had 55,048 politically motivated crimes last year, the most since public agencies started tracking the data in 2001, the minister said. “We must protect our democracy with all our strength,” Faeser said. “Politically motivated crime is an indicator of the intensity of social conflicts." Man to face charge of killing mother at sea for inheritance
A 28-year-old man who was rescued from a raft off the coast of New England in 2016 after his boat sank awaited arraignment Wednesday on charges he killed his mother at sea to inherit the family’s estate. Nathan Carman was expected to be arraigned in federal court in Rutland on multiple fraud charges and a first-degree murder charge in the death of Linda Carman. He shouted “Not guilty!” in the direction of reporters as he approached the courtroom. Authorities allege in the indictment unsealed Tuesday that Carman also killed his grandfather, John Chakalos, at his home in Windsor, Connecticut , in 2013 as part of a scheme to obtain money and property from his grandfather’s estate, but he was not charged with that killing. “As a central part of the scheme, Nathan Carman murdered John Chakalos and Linda Carman,” the indictment reads. Carman was found in an inflatable raft eight days after leaving a Rhode Island marina to go fishing with his mother, who was never … [Read more...] about Man to face charge of killing mother at sea for inheritance

Finland president says he is “confused” about Turkey’s position on NATO
The President of Finland has said he has been left confused about NATO member Turkey's position on their ascension to the defensive alliance after the country raised concerns about the Nordic country. President Sauli Niinistö told reporters at a Sunday press conference that Instanbul's position had left him perplexed and said Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously appeared favorable to Finland joining NATO following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But in a statement shared on Friday, May 13, Erdoğan raised concerns that Finland and Sweden's membership had large numbers of people supporting the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), which Turkey regards as a terrorist group. According to the Guardian , he added: "We don't want to commit a mistake. Scandinavian countries are like guesthouses for terrorist organizations. To go even further, they have seats in their parliaments too. Buffalo shooting stirs painful memories in New Zealand, bans manifesto
New Zealand's acting chief censor has placed a temporary ban on people in the country sharing the manifesto allegedly written by a teenager arrested in connection with a mass shooting in Buffalo, which contains similarities to the 2019 terrorist attack in Christchurch. According to Radio New Zealand (RNZ) , Rupert Ablett-Hampson said the manifesto allegedly shared by Buffalo shooting suspect Payon Gendron, 18, was inspired by the Christchurch white supremacist attack at a mosque and Islamic center where 51 people were killed . Gendron, from Conklin, was arraigned on a murder charge on Saturday after he allegedly killed 10 people in the mass shooting which authorities described as "racially motivated violent extremism." In the manifesto, shared online before the shooting, Gendron allegedly wrote he was inspired by Christchurch shooter Brenton Tarrant as well as other people who had carried out racist murders.
