It’s that time of year again. The start of summer means it’s time for Hollywood to pack up its trunks and biggest movies and head to the French coastline. But with so many films being premiered – including the major ones, Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis , both out of competition – it can be difficult to know what to look out for and forward to. That’s why we’ve rounded up our choices for highlights, from a new Cronenberg sci-fi to a set of dark comedies and coming-of-age dramas. Check out our full range of picks below. Showing Up Michelle Williams stars as a sculptor opening a new show in this comedy-drama from director Kelly Reichardt, whose previous eight films were superb. Can her hit rate continue? I Went to Disney World

July 27, 2020 by www.theatlantic.com

Earlier this month, Walt Disney World began reopening, following almost four months of closure due to the pandemic. I flew to Orlando to experience the magic. The week I arrived, Florida had registered the highest single-day case count of any state thus far. In Orlando’s airport, I felt a vague sense that Floridians considered such statistics a source of secret pride, as if they had set a record for fattest alligator or ugliest serial killer or most senior citizens in a golf cart. The airport where I had started my day, in Connecticut, had required masks, and everyone wore them. Here in Florida, some passengers went totally unmasked, but most wore masks in a defiant fashion, either slung under their chin or with their nostrils gaping out over the top, sucking and spewing potentially viral particles with every breath. A friend who lives a couple of hours away in St. Petersburg likens this latter style to “wearing a condom that covers only the shaft.” Disney World is in Florida only … [Read more...] about I Went to Disney World

Director brings world premiere of first feature film, Northspur, home to Marlborough

May 15, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Blenheim is set to get the red-carpet treatment later this year when local director Aaron Falvey hosts the world premiere of his debut feature film Northspur. And already on the guest list, and returning to the region just for the special night, are some of the film’s Kiwi cast members, including Josh McKenzie, Delaney Tabron, and Michael Hurst, of Hercules fame. Falvey said he felt it was important to hold the premiere in his hometown for a number of reasons, not least so that he could give back to the local community. Plus “98% of it was shot in Marlborough”. “It really was a community film project. We had many people who volunteered their skills for free because they believed in the project, and that’s really quite humbling. I don’t think the film could have been made without the support from the community,” Falvey said. The Rise and Fall of an All-Star Crew of Jewel Thieves

December 17, 2019 by www.theatlantic.com

In March 2019 , the retired police detective Mike Crowley met me in the lobby of a hotel near the Miami Dolphins’ stadium. Crowley, a 71-year-old Vietnam vet, was wearing shorts, a white undershirt, and a camouflage baseball hat that said MARINE in block caps. Over the course of three hours, he sipped a single rum and Coke. Four years earlier, Crowley said, he’d noticed a pattern in a string of jewelry-store robberies happening all over Florida: The same means of entry had been used every time. As he spoke, I eyed a large stack of paperwork teetering on the table in front of us, including thick folders labeled DRILL TEAM in black marker. At first, Crowley had had multiple suspects for these crimes. He walked me through a laundry list of itinerant safecrackers who had passed through Florida in recent years, pulling off heists in various cities throughout the state. Florida, seen through Crowley’s eyes, is a migratory stopover for the most elite burglars and safe teams. If you … [Read more...] about The Rise and Fall of an All-Star Crew of Jewel Thieves

Stranger Things: Millie Bobby Brown ‘raided’ co-star Noah Schnapp in savage water balloon prank

May 14, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Stranger Things icon Millie Bobby Brown got her prankster co-star Noah Schnapp back in the best way. The actress, 18, has starred in the Netflix classic alongside Noah since they were both children, with the fourth series set to debut on the site this month. Having known each other for years, Millie, Noah and the other main cast have formed deep friendships. And what do friends do? They prank each other, of course. The British actress appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon this week where she shared the prank that she – and pretty much the entire Stangers Things crew – played on Noah. ‘He’s the biggest prankster of them all,’ she said. ‘I too am pretty bad.’ ‘We thought, as a crew, we needed to get him back.’ She revealed that, as she was preparing to leave the set, she called Noah at 4am pretending to cry and said he needed to come to say goodbye to her. ‘We had trash bins filled with water balloons all around, and we turned all the lights off … [Read more...] about Stranger Things: Millie Bobby Brown ‘raided’ co-star Noah Schnapp in savage water balloon prank

U.S. intelligence has no evidence North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is in grave condition, officials say

April 21, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

The U.S. intelligence community has no evidence that North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un is in grave condition despite media reports that speculated about his failing health, two senior U.S. intelligence officials told Newsweek . The North Korean ruler's failure to attend this year's April 15 national Day of the Sun celebrations commemorating his grandfather, late leader Kim Il Sung, raised speculation about his well-being, especially amid a global pandemic that North Korea said claimed has not hit the country. Kim Jong Un has disappeared from the spotlight before, notably during an absence in 2014 that lasted longer than a month and also prompted rumors regarding his health. However, this absence has been noted by international media as odd. The South Korea-based online newspaper Daily NK, a largely North Korean defector-run outlet that receives funding from the U.S. Congress-linked National Endowment for Democracy among other institutions, first reported Monday that Kim … [Read more...] about U.S. intelligence has no evidence North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is in grave condition, officials say
