What does it mean to die of old age? It's a familiar phrase, and yet, when it emerged that it had been officially recorded as the sole cause of death on the Queen's death certificate, many expressed surprise. Several people commented on social media that the term seemed vague. 'Old age seems to me just a number, not a medical term,' suggested one. 'Surely there's a medical term used to explain the failure of a biological organ?' wrote another. American celebrity website TMZ said the certificate was 'simple, perhaps oddly so'. And it could have a point. It was also the cause of death given for Prince Philip, who died in April last year at the age of 99. But although it is a legally acceptable explanation for death under specific circumstances, it is an unusual one. Death certificates are part of the public record, alongside birth and marriage certificates. This is why the Queen's was made public. They are required before the family can make funeral plans and settle the … [Read more...] about BARNEY CALMAN: Only 2% of death certificates just say ‘old age’… so did it REALLY kill the Queen?

Marc Trabsky is a Senior research fellow at La Trobe University EXPLAINED: Queen Elizabeth’s newly released death certificate contains just two curious words under her cause of death – old age . We might talk about people dying of old age in everyday speech. But who actually dies of old age, medically speaking, in the 21st century? Such a vague cause of death not only raises questions about how someone died, it can also be hard on family and loved ones left behind. The many ways people die The leading causes of death in England and Wales are dementia and Alzheimer’s disease; heart disease; cerebrovascular diseases (such as stroke); cancer; and Covid. It is always risky for ministers to cite moves in financial markets as evidence of a policy being well-received. Fickle traders can turn at a moment’s notice, and any number of factors can affect how much the dollar is worth compared to the pound. But sometimes the opportunity is just too tempting. Chris Philp, a Treasury minister, seized on a brief rise in the pound while the Chancellor was giving his mini-budget to declare it was “great to see sterling strengthening on the back of the new UK Growth Plan”. Markets soon betrayed him. By the end of the day, sterling had slumped from $1.125 to below $1.09. On Monday morning it crashed below $1.04. At the same time the unfortunate minister was tweeting his thoughts on the currency, analysts on the other side of London in the Bank of England were watching a very different market with growing alarm. Bond markets - the crucial forum where the Government funds itself, borrowing from investors who then buy and sell the debt, … [Read more...] about How top Treasury sacking signalled trouble ahead for Kwasi Kwarteng
Boris Johnson hit out at Labour’s “abject failure” to invest in nuclear power and said surging bills would be less severe if they had acted. The outgoing Prime Minister criticised Tony Blair, saying “thanks a bunch, Tony” for his government doing “absolutely nothing” to invest in the UK’s energy supplies . He also blamed Nick Clegg, the Tories’ former coalition partner, for saying it was not worth developing new nuclear reactors because they would not come on stream for a decade. “For 13 years, the previous Labour government did absolutely nothing to develop this country’s nuclear industry,” said Mr Johnson. “They said it didn’t make economic sense. I think they even said that in their manifesto. Thanks a bunch, Tony, and thanks a bunch, Gordon [Brown]. “Tell that to the British business and industries that are short of affordable electricity, tell that to the families struggling with the cost of heat and light this winter.” Speaking at the Sizewell B power … [Read more...] about ‘Thanks a bunch, Tony’: Boris Johnson hits out at Labour’s ‘abject failure’ to invest in nuclear power
For the past 25 years, and especially since the financial crisis, the global economy has taken a disastrous wrong turn for which we are about to pay a hideous price . In one of the gravest intellectual errors since communism, many of the world’s cleverest people thought they had discovered the secret to perpetual prosperity. Forget about hard work, deferred gratification, tackling post-industrial wastelands or actually earning one’s keep by creating, building and exporting: there was an easier way. Cheered on by politicians, central banks kept interest rates low, favoured borrowers over savers, printed money with abandon and engineered an artificial boom in house prices, tech firm stocks, crypto-currencies, bond markets, art and more. This ersatz “wealth” was meant to encourage spending and investment, the tax receipts would fund a generous welfare state, low rates would allow rising government debt, and there would be no need for difficult conversations on ageing, science, tax, … [Read more...] about Liz Truss must hold her nerve as the world tips into a calamitous recession
The Government’s auto-enrolment pension scheme has not done enough to prevent a looming retirement crisis , MPs have warned, with more than 60pc of workers still at risk of having too little to live off in their old age. A report from the Work and Pensions Committee said urgent action was needed to help address the shortfall in savings, as the rising cost of living leaves people with less to save in their pension pots . Millions of self-employed workers or over-40s who have had limited time to build up their pension pot through auto-enrolment could retire with too little in their nest eggs as their contributions are too low, the report said. “The blunt truth is that many employees need to save more but do not realise it,” said Sir Stephen Timms MP, who chairs the committee. “The Government must urgently consider how to boost saving, including examining the case for increasing minimum contributions, before it is too late.” Sir Stephen said the government must acknowledge … [Read more...] about 60pc of people risk not having enough in their pension pots when they retire, MPs warn
Currys has reduced the brightness of TVs on display in its stores in an attempt to save money as energy prices soar. The retail chain, which has 300 shops in the UK, is also turning out every other ceiling light in shops and installing more efficient LEDs at pace across its outlets as it seeks to save energy. Alex Baldock, chief executive, said: “We’re doing things like dimming the brightness of some TVs when stores are less busy and turning out every other light and installing LED lighting across the network, all of which is self-help.” Retailers around the world are expected to put energy-saving measures in place this winter as the cost of running stores jumps as a result of a major energy crisis . In July, Currys said it had to fork out an extra £8m for energy costs for the year to April 30. Mr Baldock added: “We’re being a bit more careful about the energy consumption in stores.” Currys’ initiatives come after French luxury fashion house LVMH said it would turn down … [Read more...] about Currys turns down TV brightness to cut energy bills
David Dimbleby has revealed that he started smoking in his 70s to cope with “tense” sailing trips, as his wife said he is “really, really shy” and “doesn’t have any friends”.
