Crowds gather to catch a glimpse of a rare cargo plane at Manchester Airport
Plane-spotters flocked to Manchester Airport to catch a glimpse of a rare cargo plane today. The Volga Dnepr IL76 touched down at the airport in Wythenshawe early on Saturday morning. The four-engine turbofan strategic airlifter, which is used to transport heavy cargo, is an impressive sight and a treat for plane enthusiasts as it is rarely seen in these parts. And there was a big crowd waiting in the viewing area at the perimeter of the runway with their cameras as it landed around 10:30am this morning. First designed in the then Soviet Union in the 1970s, it has gone on to become "the most successful and popular aircraft in the history of air cargo transportation." Its success has been put down to its huge cabin size and autonomous loading without use of special airport equipment and the possibility of using the aircraft at airports with undeveloped infrastructure. Volga-Dnepr currently have five modernised Ilyushin-76-TD-90-VD aircraft in their fleet. … [Read more...] about Crowds gather to catch a glimpse of a rare cargo plane at Manchester Airport
Review: How to Catch a Star The Ark is oving celebration of a child’s triumph
We can sometimes presume that theatre for young audiences always needs the interaction and showmanship. Some of Louis Lovett's performances, for instance, dart excellently between grandiose gestures and a gossipy rapport with the audience, giving them a chance to assist the narrative. Using a different approach, director Marc Mac Lochlainn and Branar have made impressive inroads with their quiet, absorbing productions. 2014's Bláth, an adaptation of John Light and Lisa Evan's picture book The Flower, showed us an artist nurturing a plant to bloom, introducing colour into an otherwise grey city poised for redevelopment. It conveyed more emotion with its subtle touches than many larger productions are able to muster with bigger resources. That's a testament to Branar's blend of puppetry, music and design, putting faith in young audiences to piece a play together for themselves without instruction from a narrator. How to Catch a Star is the story of a young boy, first seen on a … [Read more...] about Review: How to Catch a Star The Ark is oving celebration of a child’s triumph

Yesterday the Police Federation of Northern Ireland (PFNI) defended the PSNI after Sinn Fein criticised police for their handling of a security alert in west Belfast. Last Saturday, a bomb alert in Dunmurry forced the PSNI to impose a security cordon. How to Catch a Krampus has outrageous charm and glee
The LGBTQ+ collective Sink the Pink are best known for throwing some of London’s most colourful queer nights, as well as programming summer festival Mighty Hoopla. But of late they’ve also staked a claim to the festive season through a form that you might call outré experimental drag panto — although that doesn’t quite do justice to the macabre and outrageous charms of How to Catch a Krampus. Written, directed and designed by Ginger Johnson, it’s a hugely ambitious undertaking. The central plot is a supernatural sentimental Victorian melodrama about a lost child, apparently snatched by Krampus, the malevolent horned anti-Santa of European folklore. As a street-smart spiritualist with a heart of gold, Johnson banters with the audience like a pantomime dame. Elsewhere, the show draws imaginatively on a whole array of popular entertainment forms, from gory Grand Guignol to knockabout music hall. It also evokes Morris dancing and Monty Python … [Read more...] about How to Catch a Krampus has outrageous charm and glee
