Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe won’t “stand long”: HHS secretary

July 3, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Xavier Becerra, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, said Sunday that he doesn't believe that the U.S. Supreme Court's decision last month that overturned the landmark abortion rights case , Roe v. Wade , will "stand long." His comments came during an interview on NBC 's Meet the Press , during which host Chuck Todd asked the secretary why Democrats in Congress never acted to codify Roe v. Wade into law. "Have you thought about the fact that at times when you were in Congress there were some big Democratic majorities. Was this just something that folks thought was never really at risk and that's why it never got brought up for codification?" Todd asked Becerra, who previously served in Congress by representing California. "I've been around long enough to know that nothing's ever totally safe. But remember, we still haven't even been able to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, and so this country has a way to go," Becerra responded. "But certainly I don't … [Read more...] about Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe won’t “stand long”: HHS secretary

Archie Battersbee: Judge rules life support for ‘brain dead’ boy, 12, must end

June 13, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

A 12-year-old boy has already been dead for two weeks and should be taken off life support, a High Court judge has ruled in a landmark case. Doctors treating Archie Battersbee at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, thought that the child was “brain-stem dead”. It is thought to be the first time someone has been declared “likely” to be dead based on an MRI scan, which the court heard is not as reliable as the usual brain stem test. They said that life-support treatment should end and the boy should be disconnected from a ventilator, prompting a court battle as his parents, Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, pointed out that his heart is still beating. Archie was found unconscious at home in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, on April 7 and he has not regained consciousness since. Ms Dance feared he was taking part in the “blackout” social media craze, a highly dangerous stunt challenging people to choke themselves until they pass out from a lack of oxygen. On Monday, … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee: Judge rules life support for ‘brain dead’ boy, 12, must end

Guest opinion: The SCOTUS decision is wrong: What about us?

July 3, 2022 by www.theadvocate.com

With all the progress we make in this country, there are always going to be people who want to actively destroy the nation. These people have no desire to take actions that better serve everyone. Instead, they prefer to block out sound judgment to serve values they want to impose on others. So, I was angry and deeply disappointed but not surprised when the court ruled. What about the people who were raped, experienced incest, or what if they just simply don’t want a kid? What happened to giving people grace when they make a mistake? I’m worried about what this type of regression of progress can lead to. If the right to a person’s body can be taken away in the blink of an eye, just imagine what will happen to contraception and birth control. What is going to happen to things like same-sex marriage or mixed marriage? What is going to happen to freedom of speech? Some people may think I’m being over dramatic, but it’s simply just looking at the bigger picture and how one bad decision … [Read more...] about Guest opinion: The SCOTUS decision is wrong: What about us?

Pennsylvania Becomes the Land of Oz

June 4, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

Pennsylvania Republicans have rallied behind a celebrity former TV host and political neophyte, choosing a charismatic convert to conservatism over a rival who espoused a purer form of the party’s modern doctrine. The above sentence could have been written in 2016, when Donald Trump defeated Senator Ted Cruz in Pennsylvania’s presidential primary on his way to receiving the GOP nomination. But tonight it’s a description of Mehmet Oz, America’s favorite living-room M.D., who has finally won the Keystone State’s Republican nomination for Senate with help from the former president. Oz narrowly topped the financier David McCormick after McCormick unexpectedly conceded in the middle of a statewide recount. Oz now faces John Fetterman, the progressive lieutenant governor who defeated Representative Conor Lamb for the Democratic nomination despite suffering a stroke four days before the May 17 primary. Trump was two-for-two in his Republican endorsements in Pennsylvania, as … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania Becomes the Land of Oz

America may not survive this debilitating nervous breakdown

July 2, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The United States is in the throes of one of its more extreme nervous breakdowns. In what may seem like an extraordinary coincidence, two explosive manifestations of this pathology have occurred within days of one another. The congressional hearings on the events of 6 January in which a rampaging Trump army attempted to seize the presidency by storming the Capitol, and the Supreme Court decision which reversed the right to abortion, have merged into something that goes way beyond the familiar norms of culture war. The terms in which these confrontations are being conducted go to the heart of what America understands itself to be and the legal agreement by which its disparate, displaced people live alongside one another. It is precisely that understanding and that legal agreement which the rest of the world - particularly the British who believe quite wrongly that they share America’s political culture - must understand if they are not to be drawn into this farrago. The starting … [Read more...] about America may not survive this debilitating nervous breakdown

Fact check: Does criminalization prevent abortions?

January 1, 2022 by www.dw.com

A large amount of misinformation has long circulated about abortion, researchers found in a study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2021. The debate has grown more intense since the Supreme Court officially overturned five decades of legal precedent on abortion in the United States on June 24: Both opponents and supporters of reproductive rights are discussing the issue passionately — and sometimes using false arguments to make their case. We reviewed four claims from both sides of the abortion debate. Do bans stop abortions? Claim: Many advocates of reproductive rights say bans do not prevent the procedure, but instead can lead to life-threatening abortions. "The abortion ban does not stop abortion," a TikTok user says ( archived claim here). "It just stops safe abortions." DW Fact Check: True. A British research team that analyzed data from 1990 to 2019 concluded that abortion rates in countries with abortion bans were about the same as in … [Read more...] about Fact check: Does criminalization prevent abortions?

Joe Biden is incapable of healing America’s wounds

June 28, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

It was always going to be fractious, but the sheer scale of the protests in America following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade has been stunning. Joe Biden's United States is almost irretrievably divided. We now see a very different country to the one Biden thought he would lead. The president spoke in his first days of national unity and mutual respect, and pledged to be an inclusive leader in the post-Trump era. Yet his response to this latest storm has achieved the opposite. Far from bridging divides, Biden has undermined one of the last untainted institutions in Washington, accusing the Supreme Court of making “terrible decisions” and providing an “extreme” ruling. Such behaviour is made all the more hypocritical when you consider the Democrats' chief criticism of Donald Trump: that he undermined American institutions. On abortion and other issues, Biden has shown himself simply incapable of adopting a reasonably balanced approach to complex matters which … [Read more...] about Joe Biden is incapable of healing America’s wounds
