Lewis Hamilton will start the first race of his championship parade from pole position after he avoided sanction for a near-miss during qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix. On virtually the identical piece of Interlagos tarmac where he passed Timo Glock to sensationally win his maiden title here a decade ago, there was further drama for Hamilton on Saturday. At first, it appeared as though the Mercedes star was at fault. In attempting to jump out of Sergey Sirotkin's way, he inadvertently drove into the Russian's path with the pair only inches away from a 150mph shunt. Sirotkin turned sharply to his left, narrowly avoiding Hamilton's Silver Arrows, before running over the grass on the exit of Turn 11. Given the speed at which Sirotkin approached Hamilton's Mercedes, the initial evidence suggested the Williams driver was on a flying lap, and Hamilton was caught napping. But both parties later confirmed that the rookie Russian was, like Hamilton, only preparing for a speedy … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton takes Brazilian Grand Prix pole at Interlagos as Sebastian Vettel faces stewards investigation
Monaco historic grand prix 2018
On the second weekend in October all evidence suggested this was a tourist trap of some distinction, but the reality was more prosaic. The car park was overflowing, ditto the walkways within the adjacent building, but this sudden footfall was a consequence of people turning up to pay their last respects, to see an assembly of distinguished racing cars for the final time. A few days beforehand, it had been announced that the Donington Grand Prix Collection was to close after more than 45 years. Beyond November 5, it will be no more. The news was perhaps inevitable. In recent years, a visit to the Collection has often been a stroll into solitude. If you arranged to meet a friend there, chances are that you’d be the only souls present. Yet when it opened in March 1973, it was a beacon of great hope. It was the brainwave of successful local businessman Tom Wheatcroft (1922-2009), whose passion for motor racing had been fuelled by trips to Donington Park in the 1930s – not … [Read more...] about Donington Grand Prix Collection: a fond farewell to the UK’s ‘sumptuous’ motorsport museum
Daniel Ricciardo let out a primal roar as he seized only the third pole position of his career here on Saturday night, and his first outside Monaco, with an exhilarating final flying lap to edge out Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen by just 26 thousandths of a second. Lewis Hamilton, who needs only to finish in the top seven in Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix to wrap up his fifth world title, starts third. Memories of last year’s chaotic first few corners here at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will be uppermost in Hamilton’s mind on the half-mile rundown to Turn One. The two Red Bull drivers have taken each other out once before this season, in Baku, and the champion-in-waiting is wary of avoiding another tangle between them as he chases his moment of history. “I’ve been racing a long time,” he said. “It’s very rare that I make rash decisions in those scenarios.” In the circumstances, Hamilton was delighted just to reach the … [Read more...] about Daniel Ricciardo pips Max Verstappen to pole in Mexican Grand Prix qualifying as Red Bull dominate

Sport by Press Association 05/07/2018, 5:29 pm FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Send us a story Sign up to our Daily newsletter Lewis Hamilton has launched a staunch defence of his Mercedes team – but could not rule out further blunders costing him the title. Hamilton will head into his home race at Silverstone on Sunday one point behind Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel following a calamitous race for his team last time out in Austria. Mercedes’ chief strategist James Vowles is in the spotlight after his strategy blunder – the team’s third in nine races this season – and his very public apology to Hamilton over the team radio. Hamilton, who is bidding to become the first driver to win six British Grands Prix, and the first to win five in a row, insists it is not only his Mercedes team faltering this season, and backed his team to turn it around. But the 33-year-old Englishman also hinted that Mercedes can ill-afford further errors in his … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton staunchly defends Mercedes ahead of British Grand Prix
