Councillors are not likely to be trying to impose a ban on mobile phones being used in Bedford’s schools if a meeting of the borough’s executive committee is anything to go by. A suggestion that the issue is something for the council to look at was rejected by the mayor and the portfolio holder for education. Cllr Louise Jackson, who holds the council’s public health portfolio, said: “I’m frankly astonished that children have mobile phones in schools. If you have a pay-monthly phone contract you could soon see another rise in your phone bill. Millions of people are thought to be affected, with O2, Three and EE announcing they will hike their prices next month. Customers with pay-monthly phone contracts through O2 and EE will see their prices rise 2.5% while EE will hike their prices by 2.7%. The EE price rise will come into effect in March. The O2 and Three increases will come later and Vodafone is expected to confirm its price increase on March 20. Major mobile firms tend to increase costs every year in line with published inflation figures. Turkey's mobile phone imports recorded a noteworthy decline in 2018, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). The imports of mobile phones stood at $2 billion last year. In the five-year period covering 2014-2018, Turkey reached the highest figure in mobile phone imports in 2015 with 13.6 million units, amounting to $3.1 billion in revenue. In 2014, mobile imports stood at about $3 billion, while the sector saw $3.05 billion in 2016 and $2.8 billion later in 2017. Mobile phone imports dropped by 30 percent compared to the previous year. In 2018, some 9.8 million units were purchased, corresponding to around $2 billion. Meanwhile, the number of mobile phones imported in 2017 was recorded as 12.2 million. A total of 61.6 million units were purchased from abroad during the 2014-2018 period when mobile phone imports followed a fluctuating course. Britons travelling to the European Union after Brexit could be faced with a hike in mobile roaming charges if the UK does not secure a withdrawal agreement. Mobile roaming charges, which are currently capped by the EU, will not apply to Britain if there is no deal. It will mean mobile phone companies will be free to push up costs whenever they like after the UK leaves. The UK only secured free roaming, which allows people to save money when making phone calls in Europe, 20 months ago. But that guarantee will be scrapped if there is no deal, thanks to an obscure law laid before Parliament this week, the Mirror has reported.
