Last summer, as most bands were doing the rounds of identikit European festivals, doom metal titans Sunn O))) entered the Labirinto della Masone – a two-mile maze of bamboo situated in the Italian countryside near Parma. At its heart sits a library of books on mysticism and a pyramid on which the band played. Wearing their customary flowing black robes, they shook the bamboo of the labyrinth with the immense, intense power of their riffs. It was a fitting venue for a concert by a group so otherworldly that if they did not exist it would be impossible to make them up, and whose albums explore topics such as Buddhist philosophy, ancient structures and Aghartha, a legend of a civilisation dwelling deep inside the earth. The volume of Sunn O)))’s concerts has given them a certain notoriety, yet it’s merely one aspect of a complex aesthetic that makes them one of the most mesmerising groups in operation today. Just as their music has as much in common with Arvo Pärt, … [Read more...] about Sunn O))): the ecstatic doom metallers turning rock concerts into ‘ritualist experiences’

Maybe working for Steve-O has made his bodyguard forget that most people don't enjoy the occasional blow to the head. A former security guard has sued the Jackass daredevil and his muscle, Reggie Pace, for assault and battery, claiming Pace punched him when he refused to let their entourage into a West Hollywood boutique last summer. "It's all about getting justice," Joseph Barrett, attorney for the plaintiff, Roland Cano, said in a statement Thursday. "Steve-O may believe he is someone special who can make his own rules, but he will learn that the same rules apply to him. He can't hide behind his friend in this fight." According to his lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday, Roland Cano was hired to work the door at Kitson during an Aug. 16 party for the launch of Paris Hilton's new clothing line for the chichi shopping spot. Cano recalls denying Steve-O, whose real name is Stephen Glover, entry to the boutique when he tried to get in with his pals and a camera crew filming the … [Read more...] about Steve-O, Bodyguard Sued for Boutique Bopping
Steve-O's nose is officially clean. The Jackass star has a less crowded rap sheet today now that a judge, pleased with Stephen Glover's progress and commitment to staying sober, has dismissed a cocaine-possession charge against him. The London-born shockmeister pleaded guilty to felony possession last year after being busted for making a ruckus with a fellow tenant at his Hollywood apartment house. Police found coke when they arrived at his place. "He earned his way to a dismissal," attorney Barry G. Sands said after court. "He had to stay clean and sober and criminal violation-free for 18 months." And so Steve-O did, instead choosing to occupy his time with rehab, Dancing With the Stars, the fight to legalize gay marriage, and other, more life-affirming pursuits. The 35-year-old also let MTV in on his recovery process for the special Steve-O: Demise and Rise. _______ He may have been born there, but you don't generally acquaint Steve-O with jolly old England. Kinda like when we … [Read more...] about Way to Go, Steve-O!
Joan Jett performed at Harry O's bar on Park City's Main Street over the weekend, to an incredibly packed crowd of Sundancers. While many people in the audience were eager to see Joan (who still has it, btw) rock out in her sparkly see-through number, we think a lot of concertgoers were there hoping to catch a glimpse of The Runaways stars Kristen Stewart (who plays Jett) and Dakota Fanning. But the two girls were nowhere to be found! Did they blow off their real-life inspiration? "Kristen and Dakota are not 21, so they couldn't be inside in the venue," a PR spokeswoman tells us of the gals' absence. "They were there practically the entire time to support Joan and Cherie [Currie, whom Fanning plays] and watched on from behind the stage." At one point Joan brought Cherie, Kristen and Dakota out on stage to thank them publicly. And the crowd went wild! K.Stew, looking quite shy with her standard hooded sweatshirt over her head, gave a fist-pump thank-you to the audience and quickly … [Read more...] about Joan Jett Rocks Sundance, but Where Were K.Stew and Dakota?
Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images Is Manti Te'o's career essentially over?—A.L.K. Sweats, via Twitter If by "career" you mean tens of millions of dollars in endorsements, and a shiny new spot as a first-round draft pick, and a chain of fried catfish restaurants with his name on them, then, essentially, yes. Te'o may kiss Manti's Big Poi diners goodbye, sports managers tell me. Unless... Got a question for us? Ask it on Facebook For those of you unfamiliar with the saga of the Notre Dame linebacker: Manti Te'o made big news recently with a weepy tale about the deaths of his grandmother and his girlfriend just before a Big Game. He went on to perform spectacularly during said Big Game (does it really matter which one?), and win a No. 2 Heisman ranking before we all learned the truth: The grandmother really was dead, but the girlfriend never existed. (Unless the grandmother actually was the girlfriend—an option I would rather not think about.) Just how much Te'o had to do with the … [Read more...] about Fake Girlfriend Hoax: Why Manti Te’o’s Football Career Could Be Over, Catfish or No Catfish

Larry Busacca/Angela Weiss/Getty Images Considering Lupita Nyong'o won an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave, we find it hard to believe that any of her performances could be anything short of phenomenal. But U.K. publication The Sun wrote a report that claimed director J.J. Abrams had to "massively cut" Nyong'o's role out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens because "there was a general sense that something wasn't working." The solution was to rework or cut the majority of her scenes, but as soon as Abrams caught wind of the rumors he shot them down. "The number of rumors floating around about The Force Awakens is truly stunning. Some are wonderfully funny, others simply preposterous," Abrams told Page Six in a statement. "But the only one more ridiculous than Jar Jar Binks being a Sith Lord is that I cut Lupita Nyong'o's performance because it wasn't satisfactory." PHOTOS: Sneak peek at Star Wars: The Force Awakens The director added: "In truth, her performance wasn't satisfactory. … [Read more...] about J.J. Three major Japanese container shipping lines announced Monday they were planning to merge their shipping and overseas terminal operations as the industry struggled with overcapacity and mounting losses. Kawasaki Kisen, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Nippon Yusen said they agreed to set up a joint venture with the combined operations to start in April 2018. The three companies added they would also merge their terminal management businesses outside Japan. "The container shipping industry has struggled in recent years due to a decline in the container growth rate and the rapid influx of newly built vessels, contributing to instability of the industry's profitability," the shippers said in a statement. More clout The companies noted they'd have a combined fleet capacity of 1.4 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit, specifying the capacity of a container ship), putting them in sixth rank worldwide with a 7-percent market share. The three shipping lines, which belong to the Hapag-Lloyd and Yang Ming … [Read more...] about Japan shippers merge container businesses
Hamburg-based shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd announced Friday that it would join in an alliance with five counterparts from Asia, in a move that would consolidate their overall operations and extend and enhance their global coverage. The other companies entering into "THE Alliance," as it as been named, include Hanjin from South Korea, Yang Ming from Taiwan, and three from Japan - K Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Nippon Zusen Kaisha. A joint statement declared the move a "milestone" that would allow each member to improve its departures, connections and, as a result, transit times. Together, THE Alliance makes up a fleet of over 620 ships, representing 18percent of the world's container fleet capacity, Hapag-Lloyd said. The partnership will cover "all East-West trade lanes." Cooperation between THE Alliance partners will begin in April 2017 - if competition authorities allow - and is slated to last five years.
