The Irish Supreme Court has ruled that the bread served by Subway in their heated sandwiches cannot legally be called bread, as the sugar content is too high. Under the Irish Value-Added Tax Act of 1972, staple foods have a VAT rate of zero, while other baked goods are subject to taxation. Under ordinary circumstances, bread meets these criteria, but the bread served at Subway has a sugar content that is five times higher than permitted under the law. The purpose of the law is to differentiate bread from other baked goods, such as pastry. Subway - an American fast food brand with shops in over 100 countries worldwide - was appealing this ruling to the Irish Supreme Court via a local franchisee, Bookfinders Ltd, who are based in Tuam, Co. Galway. This ruling encompasses all six types of bread served at Subway outlets in Ireland. “The argument depends on the acceptance of the prior contention that the Subway heated sandwich contains ‘bread’ as defined, and therefore can be … [Read more...] about Subway sandwich bread ‘is not bread’ rules Irish court

Trump’s controversial judicial nominee Steven Menashi was just confirmed to a lifetime court appointment
President Donald Trump's controversial judicial nominee Steven Menashi was confirmed by the Senate to a lifetime appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Thursday. Despite his having no experience as a judge, Trump nominated Menashi to the position in August. The 40-year-old serves as the associate White House counsel and special assistant to the president and also worked as a legal adviser for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The Senate confirmed Menashi to serve on the court in a 51 to 41 vote. Every Republican present except Senator Susan Collins of Maine supported Menashi, while all the Democrats present opposed him. Menashi will now take over a judicial seat that was once filled by Civil Rights leader Thurgood Marshall. Several progressive organizations, including Planned Parenthood, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Alliance for Justice, oppose Menashi's confirmation and over 100 protesters gathered outside Menashi's hearing in front … [Read more...] about Trump’s controversial judicial nominee Steven Menashi was just confirmed to a lifetime court appointment
Federal judge blocks Mississippi “heartbeat” abortion bill, six months after enjoining less-restrictive law
Six months after issuing an injunction against a Mississippi state law severely restricting abortions after 15 weeks, a federal judge has enjoined a newer, stricter law that seeks to bar most abortions after only eight weeks. "Here we go again," wrote U.S. District Court Judge Carlton Reeves in his order (see full document below) granting the injunction. "Mississippi has passed another law ban- ning abortions prior to viability." Reeves was the same federal judge who in November ruled against the Mississippi law banning most abortions after 15 weeks gestation. "The Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional and permanently enjoined its enforcement," wrote the judge Friday. "The State responded by passing an even more restrictive bill." Explained the judge: "This Court previously found the 15-week ban to be an unconstitutional violation of substantive due process because the Supreme Court has repeatedly held that women have the right to choose an abortion prior to … [Read more...] about Federal judge blocks Mississippi “heartbeat” abortion bill, six months after enjoining less-restrictive law

‘I’m fighting to keep my son’s life support on – he squeezed my hand and I won’t quit’
Looking at my son’s cheeky face as he walked into my bedroom, I knew straight away he was up to something. “Here, Mum, I’ve got you a sweet,” Archie said, smirking. He held up a bag for me to put my hand into but our pet rabbit, Simian, was inside. “Archie!” I said, laughing. “Put the rabbit back before it pees on the carpet.” He left my room and I was still smiling. His pranks and cheeky personality cracked me up all day, every day. From the moment he could walk and talk he was bursting with energy and a naughty sense of humour. At 12, Archie is the baby of the family. I also have Tom, 22, and Lauren, 20, who absolutely adore him. I started taking him to gymnastics when he was just a toddler and he had a natural talent, winning medals aged four. We couldn’t go anywhere without him somersaulting, jumping or doing the splits. He’d jump over posts in shopping centres and back-flip in car parks . My boy’s energy never ran out. It could get him into trouble at school but, … [Read more...] about ‘I’m fighting to keep my son’s life support on – he squeezed my hand and I won’t quit’
A majority of Americans oppose Trump’s crack down on birth control, women’s health care, polls show
President Donald Trump's moves to restrict abortion and birth control protections appear out of sync with the majority of Americans, according to recent polling by Kaiser. The Trump administration has repeatedly tried to finalize rules limiting women's reproductive rights—only to be held up in court . Most recently, the 9th Circuit said various federal wings lacked the authority to enforce rules that let various business, citing moral and religious reason, off the hook for covering birth control. Outside the appeals court, it appears Trump's moves are similarly unpopular. Fifty-seven percent of 1,201 respondents, as well as most Democrats, independents and women opposed the exceptions to birth control coverage as of November 2018, according to Kaiser's ongoing public opinion project on women's health and preventative care. Kaiser issues similar surveys a monthly basis. An October poll of more than 1,000 respondents found Democrats want their presidential candidates to pay … [Read more...] about A majority of Americans oppose Trump’s crack down on birth control, women’s health care, polls show
No Joke: White Comic, ‘Terror on the Prairie’ Actor, Sues Talent Agency Alleging Discrimination | The Daily Wire
Comedian Tyler Fischer, whose spot-on impressions of former President Trump, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and others have helped build a huge YouTube following , is suing a talent management company he claims rejected him for being white, according to a report . There’s no constitutional right for a woman to have an abortion, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster claims
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, who is currently locked in a legal battle with Planned Parenthood, claimed that there is "no constitutional right" for a woman to have an abortion. McMaster made the remarks this week during an interview with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett. The two discussed a recent court decision overruling McMaster's 2017 executive order that kicked Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers off the state's Medicaid network. "Most taxpayers in this state do not favor their money being spent on abortions," McMaster said. The governor added that he intends to challenge the judge's ruling and "follow up and go to the Supreme Court." McMaster also confirmed to Garrett that he wants to directly challenge Roe v. Wade and that, in his opinion, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision recognizing a woman's constitutional right to an abortion was "wrongly decided." "If I hear you correctly, there is no constitutional right to an … [Read more...] about There’s no constitutional right for a woman to have an abortion, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster claims
That 70s Show star Danny Masterson to face rape trial after claims he ‘held gun to victim’s head’ and ‘spat on woman’
THAT 70s Show star Danny Masterson has been ordered to stand trial by a Los Angeles judge after three women testified he punched, spat or held a gun during some of the alleged rapes. After the conclusion of the preliminary hearing LA County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo determined the horrific accounts of three women were credible enough to proceed to a formal trial. Masterson, 45, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped three women in separate incidents at his Hollywood home dating back 20 years ago between 2001 and 2003. His legal team, which includes celeb esquire Thomas Mesereau, who also defended Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby, have pounced on discrepancies in the accusers' stories. “Memories fade and memories change,” Masterson attorney Sharon Appelbaum said, according to the Associated Press . They also placated police, prosecutors and the witnesses themselves as perpetrating an agenda against the Church of Scientology , a religion that was … [Read more...] about That 70s Show star Danny Masterson to face rape trial after claims he ‘held gun to victim’s head’ and ‘spat on woman’
Spanish Grand Prix: Spanish cock-up sends silly Lewis Hamilton from first to last
Hammy, 27, was the fastest qualifier in Barcelona. But his McLaren team told him to stop on the track as returning to the pits would not leave enough fuel in his tank to provide a compulsory sample. The stewards came down heavy on the Brit and excluded him from qualifying, meaning he starts from the back in today’s race. During a lengthy hearing they rejected McLaren’s argument that not putting enough fuel in the car was a “force majeure” – or out of their control. The F1 rules require the car to return to the pits with one litre of fuel on board – running less fuel gives an advantage. The ruling said: “A team member had put an insufficient quantity of fuel into the car, thereby resulting in the car having to be stopped on the circuit in order to be able to provide the required amount for sampling purposes. “As the amount of fuel put into the car is under the complete control of the competitor, the stewards cannot accept this as a case of force majeure.” A McLaren … [Read more...] about Spanish Grand Prix: Spanish cock-up sends silly Lewis Hamilton from first to last
