Eating until you can eat no more is one of the greatest pleasures of Christmas. But one little girl needed two weeks of medical treatment after going too far and trying to eat decorations. The nine-month-old, from Australia, choked after swallowing a plastic confetti star which became lodged in her throat for 11 days before doctors found it on a scan. For more than a week medics were bewildered by why the girl was suffering from a fever, a cough and rapid breathing, until they realised they needed to operate. Scans of the girl's head and neck revealed an obvious star shape in her throat and doctors operated immediately to remove the festive decoration RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Dog attacks left more than 3,000 people needing surgery last... Being a mum needn’t keep any woman from her dream job! Four kids – and no business experience didn’t stop Kelli Aspland from being Mumpreneur of the Year
Kelli Aspland’s business success is a lesson in self-belief. And winning the Daily Mail’s Aphrodite Award last week proved to her that ‘hard work and persistence pays off, no matter that other people think you can’t do it’. At the NatWest Everywoman Awards ceremony, in the company of the UK’s leading female entrepreneurs, Kelli was ‘all over the place’ when she heard her name being called from the stage. ‘I started that afternoon feeling like a fish out of water, surrounded by all these successful women, and you do find yourself thinking, “Well, why am I here?” But everyone was so lovely and made me feel so special that, in the end, I felt perfectly at home. I’ve made some great contacts, too. All these women are so keen to share their stories and help each other.’ Kelli Aspland, 41, (pictured) from Wales, is the winner of this year's Daily Mail's Aphrodite Award, she revealed the challenges she faced in … [Read more...] about Being a mum needn’t keep any woman from her dream job! ‘I peeled my finger instead of the coconut’: readers on their fruit- and vegetable-related injuries
The number of people admitted to A&E with knife-related injuries from trying to cut avocados has risen, according to the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. The association said safety labels should appear on the fruit to prevent people from cutting themselves. We asked readers for their experiences of their injuries from preparing food. Some names have been changed to protect identities. JB, 39, Midlands: This was totally a result of me being a complete numpty I tried to de-stone an avocado by holding it in one hand and stabbing it with a knife in the other. The knife was blunt and didn’t go in first time so I did it again. It bounced off the pit, and slid between my middle and ring finger, nicely slicing my ring finger down to the bone. Though I needed minor surgery to repair it, I don’t think we should have safety warning labels. I accept that this was totally a result of me being a complete numpty! I gave the knife to a friend … [Read more...] about ‘I peeled my finger instead of the coconut’: readers on their fruit- and vegetable-related injuries

Grandad ‘nearly killed’ after thug neighbour batters him in parking space row
A grandfather was batter by a thug neighbour after a row over a parking space turned violent. Now the elderly man and his wife are considering moving out permanently to escape the man. Damian Hyde, 37, told the grandfather "I'm going to bite your nose off" in a vicious assault while his partner hit the man's wife over the head with a fence post. Hyde unleashed a brutal attack on next-door neighbour John Bolton outside his home in Cardiff, a court heard. It came after Mr Bolton had knocked on Hyde's door to complain about damage to his car tyres in an incident earlier the same day. Grandfather Mr Bolton said Hyde "absolutely battered" him and "nearly killed" him during the attack, reports Wales Online . When called to the scene of the attack in Ascot Close, Ely, police discovered Hyde sitting on top of Mr Bolton refusing to get off him and becoming aggressive until he was threatened with a Taser. Hyde's then-partner Laura Brooks, 43, initially called Mr Bolton's wife Marianne, 70, to … [Read more...] about Grandad ‘nearly killed’ after thug neighbour batters him in parking space row
