Budget 2021: Minimum wage to rise for workers in April – see how your pay is changing

Millions of people will see their wages rise on April 1, when new minimum wage rates come into force in England. Basic rate workers will get a 2.2% increase, Rishi Sunak said, with the National Living Wage rising to £8.91 an hour. For the first time, the government's highest rate will also include those aged 23 and over - workers who previously fell under the lower wage bracket. This means 23 and 24-year-olds who are currently on £8.20 an hour will see their pay jump by 71p to £8.91 next month. However, the increase is a U-turn on the 49p an hour promised last March. It equates to a pay rise of just 19p an hour for basic-rate workers - the majority of whom have already taken a 20% hit over the past year due to mandatory furlough. It comes as the current Universal Credit total sits at 6million. Unions accused the Chancellor of "letting down" thousands of vulnerable people who are trapped in financial hardship. Budget 2021: What COVID-19 support measures were announced and extended?

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced several measures to support people affected by COVID-19 lockdowns. Much of Wednesday's budget (summed up here ) focused on the pandemic, with some schemes being extended and some new ones introduced to the tune of an extra £65 billion, bringing the total spend on COVID-19 since March 2020 into the next financial year to £407bn. Here are all the COVID -related announcements: Furlough Mr Sunak has extended the furlough scheme to 30 September. It was due to expire at the end of April after starting last March when the crisis began. Wages for millions who are unable to work due to the restrictions will continue to have up to 80% of their salary subsidised by the government, with a maximum of £2,500 a month. This will gradually be lifted, with the government reducing its contribution to 70% from July and employers having to pay 10% for hours not worked. Obesity warning as report shows nine out of 10 COVID-19 deaths have been in countries with high rates of obesity

Hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 deaths could have been avoided if obesity rates had not been so high, according to the World Obesity Federation. The death rate from COVID-19 is 10 times higher in countries where 50% or more of the population is overweight, according to the federation. Its report analysed obesity rates in countries alongside their COVID-19 deaths and found that around 90% of deaths from the disease have occurred in countries with high rates of obesity. It has been known for months that those who are obese are at higher risk from severe COVID-19 or death from the disease. This includes the UK, which has the third-highest COVID death rate and the fourth-highest rate of obesity.
