Japan puts woman in charge of Tokyo Olympics after sexist remarks by ex-chief

· February 18, 2021 ·

A woman has been named the new Tokyo Olympics chief - replacing a man who was forced to resign after saying women talk too much. Japan's Seiko Hashimoto, who has competed in four winter and three summer Games as a speed skater and cyclist, takes over from Yoshiro Mori following his departure last week over the sexist remarks . Her name Seiko comes from "seika", which translates as Olympic flame in English. Women allowed to attend ruling party's meetings - as long as they keep quiet Ms Hashimoto announced on Thursday that she had resigned as Japan's Olympics minister to take up her new role as president of the Tokyo Olympics organising committee. The 56-year-old, who won a bronze medal in the speed skating 1,500m at the '92 Winter Olympics, was appointed after a meeting of its executive board, which is 80% male. ‘Cheeky’ influencer tries to bag free food but it massively backfires as they ‘end up at the police station’

· March 2, 2021 ·

INFLUENCERS are known to score hoards of freebies in exchange for a "shout out" on their huge online platforms. But this tactic recently backfired for one blogger who tried to nab a free takeaway meal, but ended up at the police station instead. Four Legs - a pop-up restaurant operating at pub The Compton Arms in Islington is being praised for its extremely savage response to the blogger who reached out to ask for free food. Not only did the unnamed influencer request a meal for themselves in exchange for a plug on Instagram, but they asked for an extra four meals for their "bubble" too. The influencer reached out to the restaurant via DMs and said they'd post to their Instagram and even pop in for a meal once the venue reopens. The restaurant appeared to go along with the request at first, agreeing to offer the food for free. But in a hilarious twist, the venue directed the influencer to the police station instead, telling them to "report yourself for crimes … [Read more...] about ‘Cheeky’ influencer tries to bag free food but it massively backfires as they ‘end up at the police station’

Let’s hope casual yet cruel sexism is in the dustbin of history

· February 24, 2021 ·

WHERE were you when you saw the Baby One More Time video? I was lying on my friend Sophie’s pink-carpeted bedroom floor, watching MTV and swigging Malibu from the bottle we’d stolen from her parents’ drinks cupboard. We were 13 and instantly captivated. It may not have been the moon landings or JFK getting shot, but it was era-defining for me. Watching the Framing Britney Spears documentary recently, I felt as queasy as I did sipping that neat Malibu. The fact that her father still has control over nearly every aspect of her life and finances would be shocking enough. But it’s the casual misogyny that is really sobering. We see a teenage Britney being asked in interviews about her breasts and whether she’s a virgin. There’s Justin Timberlake affirming a radio host’s question of whether he f**ked her. I realised this kind of behaviour was rife in the noughties. And how, as a young woman, I accepted it and even perpetuated it. Sixteen-year-old Britney Spears … [Read more...] about Let’s hope casual yet cruel sexism is in the dustbin of history

Thousands have ignored cancer symptoms in Covid lockdown – are YOU one of them?

· February 27, 2021 ·

HAVE you noticed something is up? A lump or bump that wasn’t there a few weeks ago, or maybe you’ve suddenly lost weight despite not really trying. Have you been to see your GP, or at least called for a phone consultation? If the answer to that question is ‘no’, then book an appointment right now. If you have noticed a symptom that could be cancer it is vital you see a doctor, and fast. What’s really worrying is that since the start of the Covid pandemic thousands of people have delayed seeing their GP. There are lots of reasons why, from a fear of catching Covid to not wanting to heap more pressure on the NHS. What matters is people just book an appointment and get any worrying signs or changes checked. Cancer is the forgotten 'C' Cancer hasn’t gone anywhere just because Covid is around. This isn't the first time I have made this plea, I’ve been banging on about it for the last year. I might as well have ‘Check your body, go to the GP and catch cancer … [Read more...] about Thousands have ignored cancer symptoms in Covid lockdown – are YOU one of them?
