Airbnb sued the city of New York on Friday, denouncing as "an extraordinary act of government overreach" a new law forcing home-sharing platforms to disclose data about hosts. It was a dramatic escalation in the battle between the $30 billion company and authorities in America's most populous city, amid a global backlash against "sharing economy" startups disrupting traditional industries. The rental site filed the lawsuit in a federal court in Manhattan, asking for the law to be scrapped and branding it a product of a "multimillion-dollar campaign funded by the city's powerful hotel lobby." The law, which comes into effect on February 2, 2019, requires home-sharing platforms such as Airbnb to disclose information about hosts and imposes hefty fines for non-compliance. Farfetch announces plans to list on New York Stock Exchange

Previous reports have suggested the initial public offering could value Farfetch at five billion US dollars (£4bn). Farfetch said on Monday that it had not determined the number of shares or the price range for the proposed offering. The luxury fashion website’s shares will trade under the ticker symbol “FTCH”. Founded in 2008 by Portuguese businessman Jose Neves, Farfetch raised 110 million US dollars (£87 million) in 2016 in a funding round which saw Singaporean investment fund Temasek become an investor. Without their parents, often knowing no English, they're brought by federal agents on journeys as long as 2,000 miles from the southwest U.S. border to social services programs operated by nonprofit, religious or private agencies and companies. Since 2014, thousands of children and their siblings have made the crossing. Coming mainly from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, some were sent by their parents to escape purported violence or other threats. Their illegal trips were aided by smugglers and typically ended with the children in U.S. custody.
