Twenty-three years ago, almost to the day, I was babysitting the legendary Jimmy Young's lunchtime show on And so, in a simple quirk of fate, at 1.59pm on the second Monday of my stint, I got to pass the baton to Steve Wright, at the very beginning of what was to become one of the longest-running and most popular programmes in broadcast history. Steve Wright In The Afternoon feels like it's been there for ever, part of the fabric of the nation. Soon it will be gone, despatched to the ether as the Beeb goes in search of younger listeners. In September, Steve steps down to make way for Radio 1's Scott Mills, as part of a reshuffle ordered by Radio 2's newish controller Helen Thomas, who is on a mission to make the station more amenable to 'mood mums' — women in their 40s. That, of course, is her prerogative. Radio controllers, like newspaper editors and football managers, must be free to mould their line-ups in any way they feel appropriate. I have no problem with that. … [Read more...] about RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: Steve Wright is part of the furniture… Don’t let hip-hop oust the Hip Op Generation from Radio 2

Short Story: O
A yellow taxi circles the airport; mist over LaGuardia; rumor of improvised explosive device; a bald Nigerian hack listening to incensed propagandists on WOR, his cab merging with the vortex; and behind the Plexiglas, an entrepreneurial American capitalist half his age, iPhone perpetually to her perfect pink ear, hair dark as a tiger’s stripe. “You could cut it with a knife,” she says. Having left a message with her lover, she speaks now to her sister. “That much is definite. The bomb is speculation.” To which big sister petulantly replies, “Everything happens to you.” The younger woman’s lover, in a Houston high-rise, listens to the message she left, thinking—he cannot help himself—that her flight isn’t really delayed but that she no longer loves him, the churning in his gut forcing him to pace the apartment. He ignores the window’s glittering panorama for the blank frame of the smartphone in his trembling hand, daring it to ring, demanding that it ring, although her calls do not … [Read more...] about Short Story: O
England have to win Euro 2022 – they will never get a chance like this again
As a nation we should not be tentative about discussing the prospect of England winning Euro 2022 . The elusive first ever major international trophy has never been more attainable, with a first home tournament for 17 years coming at the perfect time for Sarina Wiegman’s team. English journalists and fans are often accused of over-hyping the national team but, in the case of this particular squad, it is not ‘English bias’, nor arrogance to state that the Lionesses have the best chance of any of the 16 sides involved. Rather, it is simply logical to say that this hugely talented group of 23 players, competing on home soil, and coached by a greatly respected manager who won the last Euros, has an incredible opportunity if they can hold their nerve. Of course, it will be immensely challenging to pull it off because the competition is intense and wide open - that’s the beauty of these Euros: at least half of the participating teams are very credible contenders for the title. But … [Read more...] about England have to win Euro 2022 – they will never get a chance like this again
Wednesday evening UK news briefing: Cabinet ministers poised to tell Boris Johnson he must resign
This looks like the endgame. A group of Cabinet ministers - including the new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi - are planning to confront Boris Johnson this evening and tell him that he must step down as Prime Minister. The Telegraph understands that Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, and Simon Hart, the Welsh Secretary, are among those who are preparing to make the intervention . Mr Zahawi is also understood to be involved, with the push against the Prime Minister being coordinated by Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris. It comes as Mr Johnson continues to suffer a brutal wave of resignations. As this email was sent, 35 Tory MPs had left Government roles in the last 24 hours. Yet Mr Johnson told MPs at Prime Minister's Questions and the liaison committee that he intends to "keep going". Our live blog is your first point of call for breaking news. Our Government resignation tracker tells you who has quit and when they … [Read more...] about Wednesday evening UK news briefing: Cabinet ministers poised to tell Boris Johnson he must resign
The Smartphone Psychiatrist
S ometime around 2010, about two-thirds of the way through his 13 years at the helm of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)—the world’s largest mental-health research institution—Tom Insel started speaking with unusual frankness about how both psychiatry and his own institute were failing to help the mentally ill. Insel, runner-trim, quietly alert, and constitutionally diplomatic, did not rant about this. It’s not in him. You won’t hear him trash-talk colleagues or critics. Listen to the audio version of this article: Feature stories, read aloud: download the Audm app for your iPhone. Yet within the bounds of his unbroken civility, Insel began voicing something between a regret and an indictment. In writings and public talks, he lamented the pharmaceutical industry’s failure to develop effective new drugs for depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia; academic psychiatry’s overly cozy relationship with Big Pharma; and the paucity of treatments produced by the … [Read more...] about The Smartphone Psychiatrist
