More info Various estimates of when people first arrived in the Americas have been published in recent years, varying from 20,000 to more than 30,000 years ago. In the second half of the 20th century, many North American archaeologists agreed on the idea that the Clovis people had been the first to reach the Americas. Their ancestors were thought to have crossed a land bridge linking Siberia to Alaska during the last ice age, but this land bridge — known as Beringia — later disappeared underwater as the ice slowly melted. Biden says meeting with Kim Jong Un would depend on North Korean leader’s seriousness
In his first trip to Asia since taking office, President Joe Biden laid out conditions for meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. "With regard to whether I would meet with the leader of North Korea, that would depend on whether he was sincere and whether he was serious," Biden told reporters on Saturday as he appeared alongside South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol at a press event. MORE: Biden embarks for Asia with a heavy focus on China and North Korea Biden campaigned on taking a tougher stance on the North Korean leader than his predecessor. Former President Donald Trump frequently praised Kim, once saying he had a "great and beautiful" vision for his country. Trump and Kim held three high-profile meetings during his presidency. Biden said last year he'd only meet with Kim so long as he committed to a discussion about dismantling North Korea's nuclear arsenal. Yoon, South Korea's newly elected president, reaffirmed Saturday that their shared goal is the … [Read more...] about Biden says meeting with Kim Jong Un would depend on North Korean leader’s seriousness
How Madison Cawthorn was left disabled and accused of lying about crash as rep is slammed over orgy comments
NORTH Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn is no stranger to controversy when he speaks his mind. The now-26-year-old became one of the youngest people ever elected to serve in the US Congress in 2020 at the age of 25. Cawthorn notably travels everywhere via a wheelchair due to a 2014 car crash that left him partially paralyzed from the waist down. Cawthorn was 18 at the time. The incident hasn’t stopped him from working towards his political career and he has claimed that the wheelchair itself became a source of inspiration to him. “At 20, I thought about giving up. However, I knew I could still make a difference. "My accident gave me new eyes to see, and new ears to hear,” he said during a speech at the Republican National Convention.” Read More About The Republican Party TO KEEP IN LINE Everything to know about the 1939 Hatch Act SOUTHERN REP What to know about Alabama representative Mo Brooks … [Read more...] about How Madison Cawthorn was left disabled and accused of lying about crash as rep is slammed over orgy comments
Chernobyl manager who fled nuclear plant arrested for colluding with Russians
A senior Chernobyl manager has been arrested after Ukrainian forces accused him of collaborating with the Russians attempting to seize the nuclear power plant . Ukraine’s police and intelligence services detained the unnamed deputy head of the plant but have only announced the arrest now. “The serviceman fled the station and did not provide physical protection for the facility, which was part of his functional responsibilities,” the DBR, Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation, said in a statement. “DBR officers are also investigating the possible involvement of the official in carrying out subversive activities against Ukraine. In particular ... whether he assisted the Russian military in capturing Chernobyl in late February.” Seizing Chernobyl, a three-hour drive north of Kyiv, was one of the Russian army’s key objectives when it invaded Ukraine on February 24. Russian soldiers gained control of the site , which gained global infamy after its 1986 nuclear disaster, … [Read more...] about Chernobyl manager who fled nuclear plant arrested for colluding with Russians
Vladimir Putin’s plot to dismantle the West has backfired spectacularly
Since retiring from the Russian army in 2000, Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok has been an éminence grise of military affairs, regularly popping up on state television to give his analysis. He has been at it too long to be too afraid of the Kremlin. In February, he ridiculed as “fantasy” the idea that Ukraine could be easily conquered. On a primetime Rossiya-1 TV show earlier this week, he went further . “We are now in total geopolitical isolation,” he said. “We don’t want to admit it. But practically, the whole world is against us.” The host, Olga Skabeyeva, confronted him immediately. What about India and China, she asked: aren’t they worthy allies? “I’m looking at the bigger picture,” he replied. So is Joe Biden . This morning, he lands in Seoul as part of a five-day trip to salute the Asian flank of the new anti-Putin alliance. His visit makes a point that has not been lost on Colonel Khodarenok: this war is not (as Moscow TV so often says) Russia vs Nato, or Russia vs “the … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s plot to dismantle the West has backfired spectacularly
Turkey blocks Sweden and Finland’s bids to join Nato
Turkey on Wednesday vetoed a Nato decision on whether to accept Finland and Sweden into the military alliance in the first official vote on membership. At a “classified” meeting of Nato ambassadors in Brussels, the Turkish representative stopped a vote on their applications , which had been officially submitted earlier in the day, according to sources with knowledge of the discussion. The meeting was called in the hope of agreeing an accelerated accession process in order to head off Russian threats of aggression aimed at the Nordic nations. But the delay has thrown into doubt whether Nato will be able to approve the first stage of Finland and Sweden’s applications before a meeting of its leaders in Madrid on June 28. A source told The Telegraph that Jens Stoltenberg, the Nato secretary general, has taken wider talks “offline” and will instead focus on smaller meetings in order to overcome Ankara’s opposition. The Turkish veto came hours after Mr Stoltenberg … [Read more...] about Turkey blocks Sweden and Finland’s bids to join Nato
President Erdogan knows how to secure a high price from the West
There have long been concerns that Turkey is moving away from the democratic values that underpin the Nato alliance. Accusations of authoritarianism have plagued President Erdoğan since he assumed office. This week, Turkey broke Nato unity by holding up applications by Finland and Sweden to join the alliance. At a meeting of ambassadors in Brussels on Wednesday, representatives of the Turkish President stopped a vote on the applications, dashing the hopes of officials that the two Nordic nations could undergo an accelerated accession process. This has inevitably raised questions about how sustainable Turkey’s Nato membership really is. On the one hand, Ankara has done much to support Kyiv since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion. It closed the Bosphorus and the Dardanelle straits to warships, preventing Russia from replacing lost ships. Turkish drones sold to the Ukrainians have also proved highly effective. More generally, Ankara is an important strategic ally, with a … [Read more...] about President Erdogan knows how to secure a high price from the West
Finnish town gets ready for Russian attack
In the run-up to her wedding day, Lotta Häkämies struggled to get to sleep. But the 40-year-old was not suffering from run-of-the mill nerves. Her wedding was set to be held in the Finnish border town of Imatra, just five kilometres from the Russian border . One night, she was jolted out of bed by the sound of fighter jets. “We went outside,” she told The Telegraph at her wedding reception, as coffee and cake was being served. “I couldn’t see anything and thought, perhaps I’m getting paranoid.” But the next morning local news reported Russia had violated Finland’s airspace . “I opened my phone and saw there had been Russian helicopters over the border and the Finnish Air Force drove them away with their Hornets [fighter jets]. Would a Nato country allow this to happen? I don’t think so.” Like a growing majority of Finns, Ms Häkämies supports her country joining the US-led military alliance . It would mean more peace of mind, a guarantor of international support if … [Read more...] about Finnish town gets ready for Russian attack
Boris Johnson opens door to increased immigration from India in exchange for trade deal
Boris Johnson on Wednesday opened the door to increased immigration from India to the UK in exchange for a trade deal, as he prepared to meet Narendra Modi , the country's prime minister. Speaking from his plane, the Prime Minister said he hoped to strike a trade deal "by the end of the year" and that he had "always been in favour of having people come to this country". He suggested more relaxed rules for Indian immigrants could be offered by the Government in exchange for a speedy deal that allows the two countries to trade without tariffs. "We have a massive shortage in the UK, not least in experts in IT and programmers," Mr Johnson said. "We're short to the tune of hundreds of thousands in our economy. "We need to have a professional approach but it has to be controlled." His comments come after ministers announced they would loosen visa restrictions for Indian students earlier this year. Easier immigration is a key demand of Mr Modi in trade negotiations, and could … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson opens door to increased immigration from India in exchange for trade deal
