CONOR BENN wants to become a “mini Mike Tyson” on his US boxing debut. Benn, 21, who is the son of British boxing legend Nigel Benn, has had an exciting start to his professional career with seven knockouts from his first nine fights and no defeats. Speaking to Sky Sports as he prepares to face off in New York on November 11, he said: “Instead of fighting like a Mexican, I will be coming out like a mini Tyson.” Talking about making his American debut at the Nassau Coliseum, Benn said as soon as he heard Mike Tyson fought there back in the day, he knew he wanted to fight like one of the sport’s best ever. He added: “As soon as someone told me he’d boxed there back in the day, it was the obvious one. The Mexicans can wait. I am going to go out to New York and come out like Tyson. “Fighting at York Hall was a great experience, but come on — New York? I am genuinely buzzing. “I’m content I’ve got another fight … [Read more...] about Conor Benn wants to become ‘mini Mike Tyson’ as he gears up for US debut
WBA (Super), IBF, and IBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua believes there are some notable differences between him and boxing legend Mike Tyson. Joshua (19-0 record in boxing) is set to defend his titles in Cardiff against Kubrat Pulev on 28 October in a fight that has already become the fastest-selling event with 70,000 tickets sold. Should he win that fight, Joshua can expect to face WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (38-0 record in boxing) in a title unification bout, who himself is in action as he defends his belt against Bermane Stiverne on 4 November. Joshua, who has long been compared to Tyson, can solidify his legacy by unifying the belts and continuing his impressive run. However, the 27-year-old believes there are some key differences between him and the former heavyweight champion. For one, Joshua believes he has more heart than Tyson as he came back from a knockdown to defeat Wladimir Klitschko in April. The second is that Joshua feels he breaks people … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua: ‘Mike Tyson broke his opponents before they got in the ring, I break them in the ring’
ANTHONY JOSHUA is looking at Mike Tyson for inspiration to become one of the greatest most feared heavyweights of all time. Joshua says he wants to learn how Iron Mike would use his technique to fight on the inside. Speaking to Sky Sports, the IBF, WBA and IBO heavyweight world champ said: “I can take people to the trenches and I can turn it into a fight about heart. “But I want to show my finesse and Tyson wasn’t known for his heart, he was known for his technique. “He was known for how great he was on the inside.” Joshua is making plans for being known more than just a “slugger,” and wants to be remembered as a great fighter. He added: “A lot of fighters aren’t known just for being sluggers and stuff. They are known for being great fighters and that’s where I’m trying to get to.” The Watford boxer said he is ready to do whatever it takes to get to a stage where he can be called the greatest. Joshua said: … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua aiming to become knockout king and modern day Mike Tyson
BY time up his ear was looking like it had been bitten by Mike Tyson. But years playing at Old Trafford meant Darren Fletcher never lost belief Scotland could land a KO blow. Martin Skrtel’s 89th-minute own goal gave Gordon Strachan’s side the win they’d craved against ten-man Slovakia. And Fletcher, who was left bloodied by a sore one from the big defender’s elbow, said: “I’ve been at a team famous for late goals — and it’s not by luck. “It’s by perseverance, doing the right things, being brave, believing in yourself and working the opposition side to side when they went down to ten men. “That tired them out. Then it was no coincidence the two boys who came on with fresh legs, Ikechi Anya and Chris Martin, combined to score after we’d worked them. “I think it’s a belief in the team that, once you score a couple of late goals, you definitely believe in yourself. “You know you can keep going. … [Read more...] about Scotland’s Fletcher says he looked like he’d been bitten by Mike Tyson
EVANDER HOLYFIELD says the reason Mike Tyson bit his ear 20 years ago was because the then ‘baddest man on the planet’ was afraid and looking for a way out. Holyfield always knew he could beat Tyson in that infamous fight of 1997, despite the boxing public favouring Iron Mike for the victory. Speaking to journalist Carlos Zulbaran at the 55th annual WBC convention in Baku, Azerbaijan, Holyfield said: "They said I wasn't as good because I had not defeated Tyson. "But I was not afraid of anybody. "We fought and I stopped him, so we went back to do it again and he bit me twice in the same fight. "I knew I could beat him." Holyfield and Tyson fought twice. The first fight Holyfield was able to stop Tyson in the 11th round in 1996. Then a year later came the infamous night where Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear twice bringing the fight to an end with a disqualification. Tony Bellew slams Rio Ferdinand for making 'a mockery' of boxing Anthony Joshua beats Deontay Wilder … [Read more...] about Evander Holyfield opens up about Mike Tyson infamously biting his ear off
ANTHONY JOSHUA is not worried by the shortage of heavyweight contenders because he can have a great fight with ANYONE. The IBF and WBA champion defends his titles against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on October 28 — before looking ahead to unification fights next year. WBC king Deontay Wilder and Joseph Parker, who retained his WBO belt against Hughie Fury last month, are on his radar. But beyond that, there is a distinct lack of big names. Muhammad Ali faced all-time greats like George Foreman, Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, while Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis fought each other in the 1990s, another golden heavyweight decade. But talk that Joshua’s legacy will suffer because he does not have to prove himself during a similarly star-studded era does not wash with undefeated AJ. He said: “If I fight Joe Bloggs, the bookies may not have put him in a position to beat me. “But he could end up putting up one hell of a … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua ready to take on anybody and everybody in heavyweight boxing

You get trolls. I get people sending messages here and there.“I can’t go into what they say. With the world watching, all ears will be listening into what music both Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor enter Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena to. With the hype and pre-fight slagging-off at unprecedented levels, neither will want to be outdone on the tune to welcome them to the ring. If as expected Mayweather walks out to Phil Collins‘ ‘In The Air Tonight’, he will join a list of boxers who have been associated with the 1981 hit. Here’s all you need to know about the song’s history in boxing. Undefeated Mayweather entered the raucous weigh-in on Thursday to the sounds of ‘In The Air Tonight’ and is expected to use it again for the main event later tonight, possibly in homage to the numerous occasions it has been used previously. Who thought the 40-year-old was such a big fan of the former Genesis front man? With McGregor’s hordes of fans outnumbering Mayweather’s, it was drowned out to boos and the same is likely to … [Read more...] about Mayweather expected to enter ring to Phil Collins’ 1981 classic ‘In The Air Tonight’
What if the impossible is possible? What if a foot slips, a hand drops, a lucky swing lands right and Conor McGregor knocks Floyd Mayweather cold in the craziest of flukes? What if everybody with any good sense is wrong, and Mayweather at 40, having not fought in nearly two years, is no match for McGregor? What if the loudest mouth in UFC turns out to be the better boxer on Saturday night? What if Mayweather’s 49-0 becomes 49-1 and the result isn’t even in doubt? Well, what then? Few experts feel McGregor, the UFCs lightweight and featherweight champion, has a chance in a boxing match against this generation’s most dominant boxer. But scarce were the experts who believed Donald Trump could beat Hillary Clinton, or that Buster Douglas would defeat Mike Tyson. The unimaginable sometimes does happen. And if it does, if McGregor really beats Mayweather, it will propel him to a greater height than even he might have dreamed. “If you look at this thing and you look at … [Read more...] about What if everybody is wrong and Conor McGregor beats Floyd Mayweather?
CONOR McGregor has absolutely no chance of beating Floyd Mayweather this weekend, according to boxing coaching legend Billy Walsh. The former Irish amateur trainer says he is impressed by how The Notorious has gone about promoting himself. UFC champ Conor, 29, will finally go toe-to-toe with undefeated pro boxer Mayweather on Saturday night in Las Vegas after months of trash talk. But despite admiring how McGregor goes about his business, Billy tips 40-year-old Mayweather to make it a boxing record 50th straight win. The US amateur boxing squad’s coach told RTE: “I have to take my hat off to McGregor. He has made a $100million (€84m) purse for himself out of nothing, not being a boxer, which is phenomenal. “He’s generated this interest in himself and in this showdown. It’s great (to see) as an Irishman. But as a boxer, do I think he has a chance? No. “You never know what can happen. It’s the fight game and we always say one punch can … [Read more...] about Irish boxing coaching legend gives his verdict on Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather
Jimmy’s Corner is a classic dive on 44th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in Manhattan, a half-block east from the neon marquees and flashing Jumbotrons of Times Square. The bar is warmly lit and slender, hardly wider than a walk-in closet, open seven days a week from 11.30am to 4am. The booze is cheap, the jukebox is loaded with Stax classics and the walls are a dense assemblage of posters, memorabilia and photographs culled from owner Jimmy Glenn’s panoramic life in boxing. Source: Lauren Caulk Glenn, who turned 87 on Friday and still holds court into the morning hours on most nights, has worn many hats during more than six decades in and around the fight game. He had 16 fights as an amateur, once going the distance in a loss to Floyd Patterson. He’s worked as a cutman and he’s managed a number of fighters and trained a few more, steering Jameel McCline to a pair of heavyweight title shots in the early 00s but never winning the big one. For years … [Read more...] about Will McGregor v Mayweather save American boxing – or bury it?
I’m going to hold my hands up and tell you I’m tired, really tired. The kind of tired that makes you run away to your parents, lie on the sofa for a week while being waited on hand and foot. Violins aside, my body has had a run of back luck. As if stage 4 bowel cancer isn’t enough it’s been dragged through it in the last few weeks. First came the holiday infection that I couldn’t shift, then the blood transfusion and now the start of my “nuclear chemo”. So, all in all, I’m feeling less than perky. My oncologist has decided to ramp up my chemo, as research on my tumour type shows a super strong “double dose”, can delay it coming back for longer. He thinks I can handle it. “You’ll be fine,” he told me as a double dose is pumped though me. But, my body has other ideas, and decided to have an allergic reaction. I actually lost the ability to speak. If you didn’t know what was going on it could have been … [Read more...] about How do you get through ‘nuclear chemo’? AMIR KHAN hasn’t officially retired but, just when he should be at his peak, it would be no surprise if he didn’t fight again. British boxing is booming and Khan — one of our most talented stars — should be at the forefront alongside Anthony Joshua and our other nine world champions. Sadly, 30-year-old Khan seems to have his finger firmly on the self- destruct button and, as a result, has dropped off the radar. The former two-time world welterweight champ hasn’t fought for 15 months since that horrific knockout defeat against Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas. In fact, he has had just two fights in the last three years, which means his name has been removed from the top-15 rankings by all four of the world championship bodies. Long periods of inactivity usually play havoc with fighters and do nothing for their well-being. It badly affects their speed and reflexes and often leads to the softening of mind and body. Khan is making matters far worse for himself. … [Read more...] about Amir Khan is at a real crossroads in boxing as his personal life threatens to derail him
TONY BELLEW has gone toe-to-toe with UFC heavyweight Jimi Manuwa over the Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather fight. Boxer Bomber – who succeeded in setting up a fight with British MMA pioneer Michael Bisping on the back of the billion-dollar August 26 show – backs the Money Man. But south London hard man Manuwa – who has spoken with David Haye about a cross-sport local derby - has backed his fellow martial artist to upset the boxing record books. Long-time MMA fan and Betsafe ambassador Bellew said: “Can Conor McGregor beat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match? Not a hope in hell, in my opinion. “It’s completely different sports. “Our sport is being shown so little respect that people believe that this man can just come in from a completely different sport and beat the greatest fighter of our era. “People go on about this big punch he’s got, ok let’s just say he lands this big punch he’s got. First of all, he’s not … [Read more...] about Boxer Tony Bellew and UFC star Jimi Manuwa explain Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather

PAULIE MALIGNAGGI has sensationally opened the door to fight Conor McGregor. And the former two-time world champ wants to take down the Irishman on St Patrick’s Day next year. The pair’s relationship has hit rock bottom after Malignaggi stormed out of McGregor’s training camp. He had been helping McGregor prepare for his mega-money superfight against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas on August 26. Malignaggi was furious after an image appeared to show him knocked down to the canvas following a sparring session. The American insisted it was a push but a leaked video appeared to show the truth which later sparked a war of words. And Malignaggi wants to take the rivalry to a new level by taking it to 12 rounds in the ring. When asked by MMA Hour if he wanted the fight, he said: “Yeah. At this point? Yeah.
