A giant cruise ship has arrived in Plymouth so its passengers can have a look at the newly unveiled Messenger sculpture. The MS Marco Polo sailed into the Cattewater at 12pm on Tuesday as part of a tour of the UK. The vessel is delighting ship spotters, particularly as the Marco Polo has a fascinating history involving Communist Russia, television stardom and a fatal storm at sea. The 176-metre long ship is en-route from Avonmouth having arrived in the UK from Norway. The vessel is touring the British Isles in April, taking in Cardiff, the Isles of Scilly, Scotland, the Orkney and Shetland Islands and both north and south Ireland. Cattewater Harbour Commission, the company which runs the Cattewater, tweeted a welcome to the Marco Polo and suggested is passengers have a look at the city’s delights including The Hoe, Barbican, and the monumental Messenger statue outside the Theatre Royal. THIS is the moment a huge Russian cargo ship with a “drunk” captain on board smashed into a motorway bridge in South Korea - before trying to dash off. The 6,000 tonne Seagrand collided with the side of the Gwangan Bridge in Busan as rush hour traffic travelled along the busy highway. The ship then reportedly attempted to turn and leave the crash scene before it was followed and stopped by the Korea Coast Guard (KCG). Video footage caught the moment the ship left a gaping five-metre wide hole in the lower part of the two-decked bridge. According to reports from Russia the coastguard questioned the crew on board and discovered the ship’s captain was over the limit. While it is not illegal for a person to down booze on board a merchant ship they cannot be in charge of the controls at the same time. The coastguard said it is not yet clear if the captain had been at the helm when the huge vessel smashed into the bridge.
